Building Cleaning Services Urges Fast Clean-Up Of Water Damage to Prevent Black Mold

Mold-removal-guy-01
LOS ANGELES, CA: Building Cleaning Services (BCS) (http://buildingcleaningservices.net/) warns Greater Los Angeles area residents to ensure water damage is cleaned up fast within 24 hours because of potential mold growth which is encouraged by warm and humid conditions often found in California.  The U.S. Department of Labor estimates that about 50 to l00 common indoor mold types have the potential for creating health problems.

BCS, a company with more than a decade experience in water damage restoration and Los Angeles mold removal, stressed the importance of rapid handling of water intrusion because, unattended, within 72 hours there can be the onset of mold.  Garrison Clarke, BCS Operations Manager, stated, “Common sources of indoor moisture include: roof leaks; storm-driven rain through window frames exterior walls or doors; leaking pipes, sewer back-ups or overflows and damp basements or crawl spaces due to rising damp or poorly managed rainwater drainage.”

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Institute of Medicine of the U.S. National Academy of Science, and the World Health Organization, agree that living or working in a building with mold damage results in increased risk of respiratory disease.

People who may be affected more severely and quickly than others include infants and children, the elderly, pregnant women, those with respiratory conditions, asthma, allergies or weakened immune systems.

More information on the specific cleaning protocols can be found on the company’s website: http://www.buildingcleaningservices.net/water-damage/. The company also helps property and home owners, greatly relieving any worry or stress about mold risks.  As one Redondo Beach client reported on Yelp.com, BCS “was able to explain the whole process thoroughly and provide recommendations when I needed them…. BCS also found an earlier undetected source of mold damage under the sub-floor of the house.… We likely would have never found that, and since it is directly under our bathroom/bedroom, who knows how long we could have been inhaling it.”

BCS provides water damage handling and mold removal services for the Greater Los Angeles area, and other areas of Southern California.  Established in 1997, they have over a decade of experience as a company with fast service, high professionalism and work ethic.  BCS is certified by the Institute of Inspection and Cleaning and Restoration and Environmental Testing & Technology.  To learn more, visit http://www.BuildingCleaningServices.net, or call 818-953-7100 or e-mail bcs@buildingcleaningservices.net.

Survey Shows Strong Interest in Films About the U.S. Constitution

LOS ANGELES, CA - Independent film producer and director Norm Novitsky (http://www.normnovitsky.com) has released the results of an online survey designed to gauge public interest in a feature film on the U.S. Constitution. Conducted in the Fourth Quarter of 2012, the poll generated over 1,300 responses. An overwhelming 98.9% of the respondents stated they considered the U.S. Constitution an important document, with 84.4% indicating they would be interested in an entertaining and educational movie about the subject.

“Over the last few years there has been a large public outcry against the government’s corruption of the nation’s founding principles, and against their encroachment on the people's liberties,” says Novitsky, who adds that public Interest in restoring the primacy of the U.S. Constitution and its rule of law is rapidly expanding.

“Recent events have made the U.S. Constitution a highly talked about subject amongst politicians, community leaders and the media,” says Novitsky. “Increasing public awareness and understanding of the Constitution and its tenets will result in more Americans taking action against anyone ignoring, subverting or trying to transform it.”

Novitsky’s first feature film as a producer, “Pray for Morning,” a 2006 teen psychological thriller, was distributed in both domestic and international markets. The film became popular in Japan, and developed a worldwide cult following that continues to grow.

His current film project, “In Search of Liberty,” is the story of a family that gets taken on a series of wild adventures by a statesman from America’s past. Key aspects of the Constitution are presented throughout the film, as well as the real reasons behind attempts to destroy Second Amendment rights. The film’s creative team includes writer/producer Tom Solari and director/producer Eric Sherman.

“The buzz and dialogue regarding the U.S. Constitution continues to escalate,” says Novitsky. “When you really understand this amazing document, you can begin to better take control of your life and protect your liberties."

Buying a Tree for Screening

by Nancy Penrose

Trees can be used as natural screens to create more privacy for you and block unpleasant sights. They can also reduce wind, light and any unwanted noise from cars, commercial properties and outdoor machinery. You can also use trees to define and enhance the look of your outdoor space, improve the view from your home or building, add environmental interest and even change the flow of traffic through the area.

When planted next to each other, trees can become a living wall that shields your home or business from the view of neighbors, vehicle operators, pedestrians and other passersby. They can hide specific areas, such as a backyard or driveway, minimize dust from open parcels of land, and decrease the spray from any water that is close by.

Using trees to reduce sunlight can save you money on utilities by reducing air conditioning use, and enable you to grow foliage that does best in the shade.

Trees for screening can be planted in many different places, including between houses and buildings, along highways, and in parking lot islands. Deciduous trees will begin losing their foliage in the fall, while evergreen trees will provide screening all year long.

One of the best trees for large areas is the Leyland Cypress (x Cupressocyparis leylandii), a coniferous evergreen. The Leyland Cypress not only grows extremely tall (up to 50 feet or more), it also grows fast - approximately two to three feet per year. These trees can be grown in many different types of soil, they require very little maintenance and can even be cut into a hedge.

Another popular screening tree, particularly in the Northwest, is the Emerald Green Arborvitae (tree of life). An evergreen and member of the cedar family, the Emerald Green Arborvitae usually grows between 12 to 14 feet in height and 3 to 4 feet in width. It is considered a fairly slim tree, even though it has thick foliage. These trees do well in full sun or partial shade, and keep their color all year long. The Emerald Green Arborvitae can be planted in rows and pruned to the desired size.

There are many factors to consider when deciding what type of tree to plant for screening, such as soil conditions and a tree’s particular characteristics. If you are considering purchasing a tree for screening, consult a tree nursery with big trees for sale who can recommend the best tree for your particular screening needs.

Getting Older: Middle Age Dental Issues

By Dr. Michael Vold

Getting older can result in many changes in your physical health and well-being, including your teeth. Not only will teeth wear down over time, you may begin experiencing an increase in mouth dryness, the loss of teeth and more serious oral diseases.

A dry mouth is caused by insufficient saliva, and can make it difficult to swallow and speak. It can also lead to tooth decay. Saliva comes from three pairs of salivary glands in your body. One pair of glands is located under the tongue and another on the floor of the mouth. The third pair can be found in the cheek area, between the nose and ear.

The average amount of saliva produced every 24 hours is approximately 1.5 liters. Saliva helps eliminate food debris and neutralizes acids in the mouth, which reduces the plaque growth that leads to decay. It also minimizes the potential for gum disease.

Certain medications, fatigue and diseases such as diabetes can inhibit the production of saliva, which can result in more dental problems. One way to increase the amount of saliva in your mouth is to stimulate your salivary glands with regular and vigorous chewing. To help relieve the dryness, you can use mouthwashes or artificial saliva spray.

Your dentist will know if your tooth decay is the result of a decrease in saliva, and may recommend a medical check-up depending on the situation. Don’t forget to tell your dentist about any medications you are taking that could also be causing the dryness.

Studies show that adults between the ages of 20 to 64 typically have three or more decayed or missing teeth. Gum disease is one of the main reasons for tooth loss. Consistent brushing and flossing, as well as regular dental visits, can help prevent tooth loss. Missing teeth can also be replaced with implants, bridges and dentures.

Older adults should also be wary of the onset of diseases such as oropharyngeal cancer, which can manifest on the gums, lips, cheek lining, jaw, tongue and throat. The signs of this type of cancer include numbness, pain or tenderness in the mouth, thick or hard spots or lumps, changes in the way your teeth fit together, and rough or crusted areas.

The best way to prevent oral health problems during middle age is with proper dental hygiene and regular check-ups. You should also visit your dentist if you have any symptoms of oropharyngeal cancer. An early diagnosis of a cancerous condition is extremely important for treatment and recovery.

Aero And Marine Tax Professionals Helps Real Estate Business Obtain Tax Exemption on Plane Purchase

Real Estate Development Company Get Sales Tax Exemption on Purchase of Cessna P210N Airplane

SACRAMENTO, CA: Aero & Marine Tax Professionals (http://www.aeromarinetaxpros.com/) recently helped a northern California real estate development company receive a tax exemption on the purchase of Cessna P210N airplane, from the California Board of Equalization (BOE).

An executive from the real estate development company stated: “I needed the plane to have a way to get to properties out of state. Flying commercial would take a full day rather than half a day, to some of our properties. This spring I had to take the plane to Maine. Someone had backed into the steps of one of our properties in a hit-and-run situation, and I urgently needed to get there to see the police report and talk to the person on-site. I was able to get there within a day. If I had flown commercial, I would have had to take a plane to Boston, and then drive a rental car up to Maine. It would have added at least a full day to the effort. There was another instance, a piece of property came on the market in Driggs, Idaho. Our agent called us, and I was able to get on the plane the next day, got there, saw the property, and got back home all in the same day. That would have taken at least a day and a half flying commercial. We found Aero & Marine Tax Professionals on the internet. I saw an excerpt online from a seminar they were doing. Then I called and talked to them for at least 45 minutes. I felt comfortable and confident that the process would be successful. Interaction was always positive and informative. I'm very happy with everything. I would absolutely recommend them to others. One guy I spoke to has already gotten in touch with them. He just bought a helicopter. I'm getting their name out.”

Tom Alston, founder of Aero & Marine Tax Professionals, stated: “Everyone who has given thought to using an aircraft in their business has their specific reasons for it. But when they move from the planning stages into the buying process they should certainly contact a tax professional, because you can legally avoid paying sales and use tax on the purchase. But you have to make sure everything is set up and the data is being collected properly from the beginning. Then the whole case is easily handled and a sales and use tax exemption can be obtained.”

Aero & Marine Tax Professionals shows purchasers specifically how to avoid aircraft tax and vessel tax in California and to make certain the full value of their next aircraft, vehicle or vessel goes into their pocket--not the government's. They have successfully filed nearly a thousand tax returns with the California State Board of Equalization. Mr. Alston has also published many articles on sales and use tax. Aero & Marine Tax Professionals Helps Pilot Secures Tax Exemption On Airplane

Aero And Marine Tax Professionals Win RV-12 Aircraft Sales Tax Exemption Case

SACRAMENTO, CA: Aero & Marine Tax Professionals, (http://www.aeromarinetaxpros.com/) recently assisted a pilot in obtaining a tax exemption on the purchase of a RV-12 airplane, from the California Board Of Equalization (BOE).

The pilot, David Cooper, stated: “We purchased the aircraft for recreation. We used the provision in the rules that would allow us to take the year long principal use exemption if we left the aircraft outside the state of California for over a full year. I couldn't afford the more than $8,000 in taxes, based on the budget I had originally set aside for the purchase of the airplane. I think it's valuable to note that Aero & Marine were willing to advise me initially at no cost. That put me in a position where I could decide whether I wanted their firm to take me on as a client. That was very valuable to me – that they were willing to listen to my story, tell me in what ways they could help me, and not charge me for that. The number one thing that convinced me was their record of success. Then there was the really long process of gathering records. I would absolutely recommend them to others!. I just moved the plane into the state, and I'll probably be bragging about how much money they saved me. I'm so glad I met them!”

Tom Alston, founder of Aero & Marine Tax Professionals, stated: “It’s sometimes surprising to people how much they can save on a plane with a sales and use tax exemption. I have run into many pilots and companies who do not feel it is possible due to all of the regulations required in the field. But if we are contacted early on in the process then we can ensure a successful result is gotten for the sales and use tax exemption of a plane.”

Aero & Marine Tax Professionals shows purchasers specifically how to avoid aircraft tax and vessel tax in California and to make certain the full value of their next aircraft, vehicle or vessel goes into their pocket--not the government's. Lasting Advantages of Breast Implants

By Dr. Darshan Shah

Every day, women are making the choice to get breast implants. However, many women get this procedure done without really considering their future with breast implants. Fortunately, the expectations that you should have are all positive.

Having breast augmentation enlargement can enhance your bust, making shopping for clothes easier and more exciting. Your new, enjoyable experience with finding clothes will last throughout your lifetime, as your breast implants are a permanent enhancement to your body.

Your breast augmentation natural look will give you a confidence that you may never have had before. They can make you feel more feminine due to having a more womanly figure, in turn, giving you higher self-esteem. This reflects directly on your personality from a positive self-image. This far outweighs the cost plastic surgery entails.

Breast implants are a permanent plastic surgery that you will have all of your life, unless you choose to ever have them removed or revised. When you hire a reputable surgeon to do your breast implants, the chances of ever having to get them revised is minimal.

Planning and Preparing

Getting breast implants to enhance your appearance or to merely lift up your self-image is a great idea. It takes careful planning and evaluation before you can take the next step of actually getting the cosmetic surgery done.

When you first decide to get breast implants, start with a consultation with a reputable cosmetic surgeon. At the consultation you will do a majority of your decision making and planning. Your surgeon will help you choose the size and type of implants, as well as the incision placements, that will give you the most natural breast enhancement.

When you make the decision to get implants, you do so because you want to enhance the appearance of your body. However, depending on the situation, sometimes your surgeon will suggest having other procedures done at the same time, such as a breast lift, after they evaluate your breasts.

If your breasts sag as a result of aging, weight loss or pregnancy, you may want to consider having a breast lift at the same time. Your surgeon can lift your breasts, move the position of your nipples and enlarge your breasts with implants all at the same time. This will prolong the length of the procedures and allow your breasts to look fuller and more youthful. A reputable plastic surgeon is very familiar with performing both procedures together.

Other surgeries that may be done at the same time include the reconstruction of the breasts or the reduction of the breast implants. These are also rather common. The doctor should work with you to help you achieve the look you are going for.

If you would like to know more about the other procedures that can be done at the same time of your breast implants surgery, talk with your surgeon during your evaluation. They will be able to give you their expert opinion.

After your consultation, you must set up the date for your breast implants surgery. You will need to make sure that you can take a few days or so off of work. You will need to make sure that you have someone willing to stay with you for at least a day or two to help you with everyday chores around your home, not to mention to pick you up after surgery. You will not be allowed to drive home after surgery because of the anesthesia used. It’s just always wiser to have a close friend or relative to help with this.

When asked about their breast implants and the pre-op and post-op experience, many women advised others to bring a friend or relative, and to definitely have someone there to help with day to day house tasks for a day or two. Rest and relaxation is also recommended by most women that have gone through the surgery.

If you would like to talk more about what you can expect from your breast implants procedure and future results, contact your surgeon for a consultation. For breast augmentation in Bakersfield, CA, our office can help.

Against All Odds

By Susan Mary Malone

Breaking into Traditional publishing has always been tough. Always. In this day of instant publishing, sometimes we forget that in days of yore, a writer could struggle for years, decades to finally sell that manuscript and become a real book author. Indeed, if that ever happened at all. This road has always been long and perilous, with the vast majority of writers dropping by the wayside, later if not sooner. Monsters and gargoyles and trolls block every single turn, both internally and externally. But then, grasping for the brass ring has humbled the greatest of us to our knees.

And, nothing has changed, really. Although the technology and the business model and all of that have taken off in directions unforeseen when I began in this business, getting Traditionally published is similarly difficult today as it always has been. More so, yes. Due to sinking print sales and burgeoning self-pubbed books, the Traditional market has shrunk some. Lists are tighter. Competition more fierce. As a book editor buddy of mine at a major house is fond of saying, “We’re only publishing existing authors—and preferably if they’re dead.” He says this with a straight face too. And their sales numbers bear it out.

Yet and still, folks are getting Traditionally published every day. So, how do they do it?

Hard work, fortitude, and persistence. Is it that simple? Yes.

The hard-work part comes in up front. It’s tough to write well. It’s really tough. The vast sea of self-pubbed work out there is actually pretty awful. I get complaints from readers every single day: “I can’t find anything decent to read.” And while this has been the case for some time now (don’t get me started on the Bestseller’s List), it’s a million times worse now. Literally. As I’m fond of saying: “Writing really IS rocket science.” And this hard work never ends—you must keep growing and learning and improving as a writer. Mastering book development is a life-long process. And don’t be afraid to use book editing services from a novel editor.

If you don’t have fortitude, you won’t have the persistence to keep at it. I know so, so many writers with talent who finally quit, unable to bear the soul-wrenching rejection time after time, year after year. Yes, humbling. But we all know fifty stories about famous authors who wallpapered their offices with rejections. It really does, in the end, just take one “yes.”

I began working as a developmental editor with a new novelist a few years ago, Randy Mitchell, who self-published his novel, Sons in the Clouds. Randy wanted a Traditional contract, but decided to get the book out there, promote it, and see where it went. First he honed his craft, revising and revising. Once the book came out, he’s been relentless, persistent, unbowed by the pressure. Well, okay, so perhaps it has bothered him, but not one time has he whined or complained—he just keeps digging in. He got on top of social-media, and kept banging away. And lo and behold, his novel sold to a Traditional house, and will be published in 2013! Great job, Randy!

About ten years ago, I began working with a talented young man (he was just a kid at the time. Okay, so he’s still just a kid to me, at 30!). Kevin Porter had written a good YA novel, and had worked and worked to learn the craft. We never got that one sold, but Kevin kept writing. He wrote a Mid-Grade novel, which is indeed beautifully done. Unfortunately, it has no vampires or werewolves in it. Which of course made his battle a steep uphill one. Did that bother Kevin? All I can say is he never whined or complained. He kept querying and kept sending and built up a social media presence with his blog at The Examiner. And also in 2013, his wonderful Mid-Grade novel, Missing, is being published by a Traditional house. Great job, Kevin!

Did it take ten tons of work for both of these talented writers to get published? You bet’cha. Did they succeed, seemingly against all odds? Oh, lordy yes. But the point is, they did it. Never, ever let anyone tell you it can’t be done. You have two great guys right here who say it can.

Preventing Foundation Settlement with Piers, Piles and Caissons

By Shawn Kyles

After a home has been built, weather conditions, soil issues and moisture problems can cause the foundation to settle. Foundation settlement can result in wall cracks, difficulties opening and closing windows and sloping floors. Over time, foundation settlement can compromise the structural integrity of the home. If you live in an area with extensive seismic activity, foundation settlement can be extremely dangerous and may even result in the home’s collapse during or after an earthquake.

To prevent settlement, some home foundations need to be shored up with piers, piles and caissons. Piers are steel pipes driven into the soil and connected to the foundation. They can be installed after a home is built with portable equipment and no significant disruption to the dwelling’s inhabitants. The piers are often connected with concrete beams.

Foundation piles include bearing piles and sheet piles. Bearing piles are used to absorb the weight of structure. Sheet piles block soil and water. Piles can be built using wood, concrete and composite materials. They are drilled into the ground using a pile driver. Helical piles are also commonly used in foundation repair. A helical pile is a straight piece of pipe welded with flights (steel plates). The helical flights enable the pipe to be literally screwed into the ground. Piles are connected with cement blocks, also known as pile caps, as well as grade beams.

Caissons are a third type of deep foundation used when soil conditions are extremely poor or the structure involved is large and heavy. Many hillside homes, apartment buildings and high-rise complexes require caissons to provide additional support. Caissons are also used when constructing bridges and freeways, as well as retaining walls designed to stabilize falling hillsides. When a hillside retaining wall is built, the soil behind it will exert pressure on the wall. This can cause the wall to fall, either by overturning, sliding or collapse.

Caissons are built by drilling a large, subterranean shaft. The shaft is then filled with reinforced concrete, along with steel or rebar. The shafts are drilled from 2’ to 12’ in diameter through the soil and into the bedrock. Some shafts are as deep as 150 feet.

If you are having foundation settlement problems, you can find out what type of shoring or strengthening is needed by consulting a foundation repair expert. Once your home and foundation has been properly inspected by a seasoned professional, all of your options will be explained so that you can make the best decision possible regarding your home.

Northbrook Court Dental Reduces Radiation Exposure with Digital Radiography

Northbrook, Illinois – Northbrook Court Dental Associates (http://www.northbrookcourtdental.com) is now significantly reducing patient radiation exposure with digital radiography, a technology that uses 90% less radiation than conventional dental x-ray techniques.

“Northbrook Court Dental is committed to providing patients with the most advanced dental technology available,” says Dr. Michael Vold, D.D.S. “Our digital radiology equipment is state-of-the art and makes diagnostics easier, faster and more accurate.”

Digital radiography is a method of imaging involving the use of digital x-ray sensors that are placed in the patient’s mouth. The device detects and quantifies the x-rays, and then instantly transmits the image to a computer screen. Less radiation is used to produce the image compared to traditional photographic film and there is no waiting period for film development. The need for film processing chemicals is also eliminated.

With Digital radiography, images can be easily enhanced to improve diagnostic ability, including magnification, brightness, contrast and coloring. These features help create a better visual of the tooth and makes diagnostics easier.

The technology also allows more accurate measurements, which can be extremely beneficial in cases involving implants, endodontic and similar type procedures.

The images captured through digital radiography are easily stored, and can be printed or transmitted over the Internet. Instead of copying and mailing dental records, digital radiography images can be sent by e-mail to specialists for immediate evaluation.

Northbrook Court Dental’s digital radiography equipment is meticulously maintained and regularly inspected by the State of Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety.

“Our patient’s comfort and safety is always our utmost concern,” says Dr. Vold. “Even though traditional x-rays typically emit a low level of radiation, digital radiography virtually eliminates any risks of over-exposure.”

For more information on digital radiography, visit the Northbrook Court Dental Associates website at http://www.northbrookcourtdental.com, or call their office today at 847-272-2900.

“I've had a bad case of psoriasis for over 20 years,” says a woman from Illinois. “Before Ultra Balm, I think I tried everything, from prescription drugs and invasive injections, to numerous alternative medicine treatments, but none ever gave me the relief that Ultra Balm has.”

Psoriasis is a skin and joint disease that affects approximately 3% of the world’s population. The condition causes outbreaks of raised red lesions surrounded by silvery white dead skin scales that can cover the whole body. Symptoms include burning, itching, cracking, bleeding and pain.

In addition to skin disfiguration, psoriasis can cause joint inflammation, also known as psoriatic arthritis. When psoriasis affects the joints, it can make working or performing simple tasks at home extremely difficult. Psoriasis is believed to be triggered by many different factors, including certain kinds of drugs, stress, infections and injuries to the skin.

Ultra Balm is an FDA certified product that contains Vitamin A, an anti-oxidant; Vitamin D, which helps with new cell growth and bone development, Vitamin E which repairs tissues and promotes healing, Aloe, a skin healer and moisturizer, and Lanolin, which is used to soften all types of leather and considered the "Heavy Duty" moisturizer for rough, dry skin. Launched in 2004, Ultra Balm is sold nationwide at health and beauty shows, home and garden shows, state fairs, selected retailers and online at http://www.ultrabalm.com.

“I was suffering with psoriasis on my hands and feet. The medicine that my doctor was prescribing for me was too strong, therefore making it worse,” says another Ultra Balm customer. “Since I discovered Ultra Balm, the condition of my hands and feet has greatly improved, and the dry, chapped skin is being replaced by healthy smooth skin.”

What Is Psoriasis?

by Vicki Gailzaid

Psoriasis is a skin condition, causing red patches of skin and skin flaking. It can have different degrees of severity, affecting only a certain part of the body or all of it. There isn’t a lot known about its cause and there is no known cure, but the symptoms are known and treatment to relieve those suffering from it is possible. It’s not contagious, but the effects last a lifetime.

It most often occurs between the ages of 16 to 22 or between 57 to 60, fairly evenly affecting women and men. Interestingly it affects Caucasians (2.5%) more than African Americans (1.3%).

The disease is not particular about who it affects. America’s Next Top Model of 2006 CariDee English, actor Jerry Mathers of Leave It To Beaver, American novelist John Updike and even Joseph Stalin, to name a few, have all had the condition.

The name itself comes from Greek, “psora” which meant to itch. Psoriasis was included with skin conditions called tzaraat in the Old Testament. It was also once confused for Leprosy, although modern diagnosis clearly defines the differences in the two. So Man has been aware of the condition for a long time, even if he didn’t always know what he was looking at. In 1841 a Viennese dermatologist, Erdinanan von Hebra, gave psoriasis its name.

Physical injuries, ranging from sunburn and vaccinations to scratches, have been observed to bring it on. The Psychiatric drug Lithium can bring it on, as well as some heart medications and high blood medications, and even one arthritic medication (Indomethacin).

There are several symptoms--red patches of raised, inflamed skin covered with silky white scales are the most common. It can be seen as bumps filled with pus (again, not contagious) often on the hands and feet. Smooth red areas of irritated skin can occur in folds of the body. Some cases solely affect the nails, damaging the nail itself and the skin right under it. It can also affect the scalp, causing scales to come off the scalp and causing increased hair loss. It can be seen in a number of tiny red ovals over different areas of the body. Its most serious form is when red patches of inflamed skin cover the whole body and hospitalization is required.

A dermatologist should be consulted if the condition is suspected. A biopsy will determine if the condition is present or if it’s some form of dermatitis or other condition. If one has any of the above symptoms definitely an examination should be done. Once the condition itself is spotted the specific type of Psoriasis can then be known and treated.

If the condition itself is known, treatments only focus on controlling and relieving the condition. A cure isn’t known at this time. But it can be brought down to a manageable level with a natural dry skin treatment. Using a good lotion for dry skin can help the thing to be managed or soothed. Look for natural skin care products containing lanolin. The right natural skin care product can do wonders at relieving the itch. Washing the affected skin area daily helps, as well as direct exposure to sunlight, while avoiding sunburn. A word of warning--taking medications to the maximum level in an effort to wipe out the condition can bring about undesired side effects. Definitely in all cases where treatment is to be undertaken a dermatologist should be consulted to determine the exact treatment and to monitor the effects.

Knowing more about the condition can help one to be less effect of the condition if one has it. One needn’t suffer; the condition can be managed, and a natural dry skin treatment is recommended.

How Fluoride Prevents Tooth Decay

By Dr. Michael Vold

Fluoride is a salt of the element fluorine, which can be found in the earth’s crust. It is a key ingredient in toothpaste and other types of dental hygiene products such as mouthwash. Although it occurs naturally in water, soil, plants and many foods, the fluoride that is used for dental care (and added to our water supply) is generally synthesized.

Fluoride protects teeth against the decay caused by plaque. When the bacteria in plaque interacts with sugars in the mouth, acids are produced that eat away at tooth enamel. Fluoride helps protect teeth by impeding the acidic processes that cause erosion. It also bonds with the enamel, making the tooth more resistive to decay. Fluoride can even repair and rebuild enamel that has been damaged.

During the 1930’s it was discovered that people who drank water with naturally occurring fluoride had significantly less cavities and tooth decay than individuals without access to fluoridated water. The fluoridation of our water supply began during the 1940’s in Michigan. Fluoridation involves optimizing the natural fluoride in water to levels that will help protect teeth. One part per million fluoride is now added to drinking water. Currently, almost two-thirds of U.S. cities have fluoridated water. Studies have shown that the fluoride contained in drinking water reduces the potential for cavities and other forms of tooth decay by as much as 35% in adults and 60% in babies

These days however, many people prefer drinking bottled and purified water. These products have insufficient amounts of fluoride to stop tooth decay. Children in particular require sufficient amounts of fluoride to protect their teeth. Fluoride is also important for individuals who eat large amounts of carbohydrates and sugars, have a history of tooth decay, wear braces, or have bridges and crowns.

After brushing, fluoride is considered the most effective method of maintaining healthy teeth. It is generally considered safe, but toxic reactions can occur if too much fluoride is consumed over a long period of time. This can include tooth enamel discoloration (dental fluorosis), as well as joint pain.
If you need to increase the amount of fluoride you consume, ask your dentist about taking fluoride tablets or drops. Bottled water with fluoride can also be purchased, and there are purification systems available that will not eliminate fluoride when purifying the water. Your oral health care should also include brushing, flossing and regular visits to the dentist to remove plaque.

Protecting Trees During the Winter

by Nancy Penrose

During the winter, cold temperatures, snow, excessive sun and strong winds can harm trees. Types of winter damage include broken branches from snow and ice, as well as damaged bark, branches and roots. Newer trees are more prone to injury than older, more established trees.

Soil expands when it gets wet from rain, snow and ice, and contracts when it dries. Frequent changes in soil moisture can damage tree roots. Placing a layer of mulch around a young tree can help keep soil conditions more consistent. The mulch also acts as an insulator. It will keep the ground beneath it warmer for longer periods of time, and can prevent cold air from reaching the tree’s roots.

Snow and ice will also bend and break branches. One way to avoid snow damage with small trees is to prune weak branches and wrap the tree for the winter.

A strong winter sun can cause bark damage, particularly on newer trees and thin-barked trees such as maple and mountain ash. Older trees generally have thicker bark, which enables them to withstand intense sunlight. Look for sun damage (dried, cracked and dead bark) on the south side of a tree. Wrapping more vulnerable trees can help protect them from the sun’s rays.

Deer, rabbits, mice and other foraging animals can harm your trees as well. In the winter, they will eat twigs, bark, leaves and buds.

The extent of “deer browsing” will depend on the severity of the winter. Once deer run out of preferred plants, they will browse other types of foliage. Deer are attracted to willow, dogwood, pine and acorn-bearing white and red oak trees. They will generally avoid beech, birch and ash trees. Rabbits will eat the branches and bark of young trees, including various maples and white oak.

The most common method of protecting your trees against wildlife is fencing and wiring. The fence will need to enclose the entire area around your tree, and should be specifically designed to protect it from deer and other wild animals. Various repellants can also be used to discourage deer and rabbits from nibbling and eating foliage. They have a bad taste or smell and are non-toxic.

While the winter months can pose some risk to newer and smaller trees, most will recover quickly from any damage they incur. Bad weather conditions and hungry animals will have less of an impact on larger, older trees. Winter is also the best time to transplant trees because they have become dormant. A transplanting specialist can help you select the right tree for your project and determine if any protection will be needed after it is in the ground.
