Northbrook Court Dental Associates Offers Drill-less Air Abrasion Dental Care

Northbrook, Illinois - Northbrook Court Dental Associates, a long time Northbrook dental clinic, has announced it now offers air abrasion, a new technique for removing tooth decay without the use of a drill.

“Because air abrasion produces significantly less heat, pressure, sound and vibration than a standard dental drill, patients experience much less discomfort,” says Dr. Michael Vold, D.D.S., J.D. “The technology can also be used without anesthetics.”

The air abrasion instrument works like a sandblaster. It uses compressed air or gas to emit a continuous stream of tiny particles made from silica, aluminum oxide or a baking soda mixture. When directed at the decaying part of the tooth, the particles quickly and efficiently strip away the decay. The decay is removed from the month with suctioning from a thin tube.

Some form of eye protection is usually necessary to prevent irritation. A rubber dam may also be needed to protect teeth that aren’t being treated.

Air abrasion is a safe and effective alternative to drilling. Not only does it minimize the possibility of fracturing or chipping a tooth, several areas of decay can be treated during one visit and a greater amount of healthy tooth tissue remains following the procedure. Air abrasion also keeps the mouth drier, which is beneficial for other procedures.

Air abrasion works extremely well when treating small cavities and to prepare teeth for composites. The technique can also be used to remove surface stains and tooth discolorations, repair cracks or chips, prepare a tooth surface for bonding or sealants, and to remove older restorations, crowns and bridges.

Compared to regular drills, the air abrasion is a good alternative for children, the elderly and patients who are nervous and fearful during dental procedures.

For more information on air abrasion dental care, or more information on their Northbrook dental care or about cosmetic dentistry, visit the Northbrook Court Dental Associates website at http://www.northbrookcourtdental.com, or call the office today at 847-272-2900.

Buying Flowering Cherry Trees

by Nancy Penrose

Cherry trees are members of the “rosaceae” (rose) family and ”Prunus” genus, which includes plum, peach and almond trees. Cherry trees include both the commercial fruit-bearing trees (Prunus avium and Prunus cerasus) and ornamental flowering cherry trees, known for their masses of beautiful, fragrant pink or white blossoms.

Flowering cherry trees come in many varieties, shapes and sizes. They can be planted as a shade tree for smaller areas, and used as a focal point (specimen) in a garden, lawn or landscape. The trees grow well in fertile and well-soil. After they have become established, they can tolerate partial shade.

The flowering cherry tree is a hybrid indigenous to several Asian countries, including China, Korea, India and Japan, where it is highly revered. The Japanese consider the tree a symbol of the cycle of life. Its spectacular yet short blooming season has inspired artists from many disciplines, including poets, painters, songwriters and playwrights.

In 1912, Japan gifted more than 3,000 flowering cherry trees to the people of United States in recognition of the growing friendship between the two countries. The trees were planted on the White House grounds, around the Tidal Basin and East Potomac Park. The first “Cherry Blossom Festival” was held in 1935 and became an annual event.

Some of the more popular ornamental cherry trees include the Japanese Flowering Cherry Tree (Prunus serrulata), and Akebono or Yoshino Cherry (Prunus yedoensis).

Prunus serrulata, the Japanese Cherry (also called the Oriental Cherry), is a small deciduous tree ranging 20-30 feet tall and 12-20 feet wide depending on the specific variety. The tree has a single trunk and produces flowers in clusters of two to five in colors ranging from white to pink. A popular Prunus serrulata cultivar is the Kwanzan (Kanzan), which grows to approximately 25 feet in height, in a vase shaped canopy. It has thick double pink blossoms and is typically one of the later cherries to bloom in the spring. Another popular cultivar is the Mt. Fuji – known best for its thick double white blossoms and extreme horizontal canopy.

The Prunus Yeodensis Cherry does well in full sun and moist, well-draining soil. It grows between 20 and 30 feet tall, and produces flowers in clusters of five. Two popular varieties are the Yoshino, which has a light pink bud, but then opens up to a single white blossom, or the Akebono which has a light pink blossom. These trees are fairly fast growing and disease resistant.

If you are planning on buying trees for your residential or commercial property, consider purchasing an ornamental flowering cherry tree. The tree’s exquisite blooms, rich history and cultural significance will make it a unique and captivating addition to your landscape.

Producer Announces Development of Feature Film on U.S. Constitution

(LOS ANGELES, CA) - Film producer and director Norm Novitsky (http://www.normnovitsky.com) has announced the development of “In Search of Liberty,” a new feature film on the U.S. Constitution. The movie tells the story of a family of four that gets taken on a series of adventures by a charming statesman from America’s past. Using logic, humor and magic, he opens their eyes to the origins and importance of the Constitution, why it is currently under attack and what can be done to save it.

Novitsky, who calls the film “a game changer,” says the government’s continuing corruption of the nation’s founding principles has fueled public interest in the Constitution and restoring its primacy.

“In Search of Liberty increases public awareness and understanding of the Constitution, and in an entertaining and educational way, exposes the government for the frightening house of horrors that it really is,” says Novitsky.

Important Constitutional amendments are explained in the film, including the right to freedom of religion and speech, the right to bear arms, warrants for search and seizure and States' rights.

In the Fourth Quarter of 2012, Novitsky conducted an online survey to gauge public interest in a film based on the Constitution. Nearly 100% of the 1,700 survey respondents stated they considered the U.S. Constitution an important document, and 84.4% indicated they would be interested in seeing a feature film on the topic.

The movie’s creative team includes writer/producer Tom Solari and director/producer Eric Sherman. Solari has worked as an entertainer and comedy writer on major network TV shows and Sherman has been a directing and production consultant to several top studios.

“Recent events have prompted a national debate on the subject of the Constitution,” says Novitsky. “Our intention is to produce a film that will inspire Americans to take action against anyone trying to subvert our constitutional rights and freedoms.”

What Are Dental Implants?

by Dr. Michael Vold

Dental implants are tiny screws, typically made of titanium, that are used as a replacement for missing tooth roots. Designed to fuse with bone, they provide the foundation for replacement teeth, including crowns, bridges and dentures.

The loss of a tooth can not only make smiling uncomfortable, it can also cause problems with chewing, and biting. Tooth loss also affects the jawbone. Without the tooth, the bone starts to shrink and will become brittle over time.

One of the primary reasons for tooth loss is tooth decay. Plaque builds up in the mouth when teeth aren’t brushed and flossed regularly or properly. The plaque contains sugars and acids that eat through tooth enamel, resulting in cavities. If the deterioration isn’t stopped, the damage can lead to the loss of teeth.

Tooth loss also occurs from periodontal disease, which causes gum tissue to recede. Gum disease in its early stages (gingivitis) can be treated. If the infection progresses, it can result in the loss of connective tissue and bone. More than 75% of U.S. adults currently have some form of periodontal disease.

Accidents involving major impacts, such as falls, sporting injuries and auto accidents, can cause tooth loss as well.

According to recent studies, most Americans will have lost an average of 12 teeth by age 50, and one out of every four people will have lost all of their teeth by the time they reach 60 years of age.

Dental implants are extremely durable and considered a permanent solution to the loss of a tooth. Because the implant fuses with the bone, you no longer have to be concerned about bone loss or gum recession.

The dental implant procedure involves several steps. First, any remaining pieces of the missing tooth are removed. A small hole is then drilled into your jaw where the screw will be placed. Once the screw has been inserted, a protective cover is placed on top. This part of the procedure is generally conducted with a local anesthetic. It can take from three to six months for the screw to anchor itself in to the jawbone, after which the post is attached to the implant. The last, restorative part of the process involves taking impressions to create a prosthetic tooth that will be attached to the implant.

Sometimes a jawbone isn’t thick or strong enough for the procedure, in which case bone grafting may be needed. The grafting process involves transplanting a bone piece from another part of your body to your jawbone. A bone graft can take several months to heal.

The success rate for both upper and lower jaw implants is extremely high. Once the entire process is completed, your implant teeth will feel and look natural.

If you have a missing tooth, your dentist can discuss all of your options in detail so that you can make the best possible decision regarding your teeth. Just remember that replacing a missing tooth as soon as possible is important in order to prevent gum and bone deterioration.

Julian Construction Urges Underpinning For Shaky Foundations

Foundation Construction Company Seeks Increased Awareness of Important Home Support

LOS ANGELES, CA: Julian Construction, (http://www.julianconstruction.com/), a foundation repair and construction company in Los Angeles, is urging homeowners to learn more about the use of underpinning with a home foundation and, second, to learn the signs of foundation problems which indicate a need for underpinning.

Underpinning is the process of strengthening and stabilizing the foundation of an existing building or other structure. Underpinning is accomplished by extending the existing foundation in depth or in breadth so that it either rests on a more supportive soil stratum or distributes its load across a greater area.

Julian Construction noted several reasons a home’s foundation could need underpinning.

* Additions to a home, such as adding an additional story, could cause the need for additional support to the foundation.
* Over time a building’s foundation may settle or rotate at certain points, causing strain on the structure.
* If interior changes to the building resulted in the removal of load-bearing walls, the foundation would be affected.

A competent foundation specialist would be able to see if these or any other foundation problems exist during a foundation inspection.

Julian De La Torre, founder of Julian Construction, stated: “Underpinning is a very useful tool for strengthening a building's foundation. It should be noted that each foundation underpinning is unique and should be designed by a professional engineer or an architect. At Julian Construction we can review plans or obtain the engineering necessary for your project and complete the repair. And an underpinning is not a do it yourself type job. You need to bring in a competent foundation contractor to do this type of job."

Julian Construction owns its own company and is built on a “no middlemen” model – no salesmen, no subcontractors. When you work with Julian Construction you get the principals of the company and workers of Julian Construction under your home. The result is the highest quality work at affordable prices. They can be contacted by phone at 323 733-3377, by fax at 323 733-4477 or via their website, www.julianconstruction.com. Roof Flashing Issues Noted As Problem In Some Homes

Julian Construction Seeks To Raise Adherence To Industry Standards For Roofing

LOS ANGELES, CA: Julian Construction, (http://www.julianconstruction.com/), a construction and roofing contractor company working in the Southern California area, has brought to attention an important need for homeowners to get their roof flashing inspected. Roof flashing seals and protects the joints and places where the roof of a house intersects with other things, such as pipes, chimneys, vents, etc. The company indicates that it is an important point of home maintenance and safety, as improper flashing allows moisture to get into a home, potentially causing many problems.

Proper flashing deflects moisture from entering into a structure. But Shawn Kyles, Chief Safety Inspector of Julian Construction noted that improper installation or design can lead to actively directing water inside the structure, as opposed to outside. This could result in water entering walls and other parts of the structure, or even seeping into the structure’s foundation causing even further problems. In addition to the health risk of prolonged moisture entering a home, these structural concerns are such that homeowners should definitely take care of roof flashing. Inspection by a competent professional will determine if roof flashing is in need of repair in a home.

Mr. Kyles stated: "Having your roof regularly inspected by a professional contractor is an important part of the home maintenance process. When roof problems are detected early, not only will the repairs usually be less costly, it can help prevent other types of damage to your home. Flashing repair can be done very easily at any time of the year when overseen by a competent construction company."

Julian Construction owns its own company and is built on a “no middlemen” model – no salesmen, no subcontractors. When you work with Julian Construction you get the principals of the company and workers of Julian Construction under or on top of your home. The result is the highest quality work at affordable prices. They can be contacted by phone at 323 733-3377, by fax at 323 733-4477 or via their website, www.julianconstruction.com. Building a Retaining Wall

by Shawn Kyles

Retaining walls are stabilizing structures built to stop erosion and the downward movement of soil on a slope. The walls are built in a way that redistributes the pressure that comes from the sloping ground. A variety of materials are used to build the walls, such as concrete, steel, stone, brick, composites, wood and even glass.

Retaining walls on residential properties are often constructed to hold back the soil from a hillside, many times to create more usable space. Other uses for a retaining wall include stopping soil from sliding away from a foundation or from damaging the landscape.

There are various kinds of retaining walls, including gravity walls, anchored walls, cantilevers and sheet pile walls.

Gravity restraining walls depend on their own significant weight to keep soil from moving. They are constructed leaning backwards toward the soil. Early gravity walls were built from concrete or stone. Today, they are made from many different types of materials, including steel wire baskets filled with rocks and geosynthetics.

Anchored walls are restraining walls constructed using cables (usually extremely strong steel) that are anchored into the soil or rock behind the wall. They are used when the wall cannot be built strong enough to restrain the load. Constructing an anchored wall is an extremely complex process.

Cantilever walls are used to hold back a large amount of soil. They are made with steel-reinforced concrete that rest on slab foundation. Cantilever walls convert horizontal pressures from the soil to vertical pressures on the ground.

Sheet piling walls, which can be made from wood, vinyl or steel planks, are used in places where the space is tight and the soil is soft. The planks are driven into the ground.

Determining what type of retaining wall construction to use will depend on the type of soil that needs to be retained, the kind of soil the wall will be built on, how much space is available for the wall and the degree of slope above and below the structure. The location of pipes and service lines can also be a factor in construction.

Deciding what material to use will also be based on the environment, as well as budget and preferences regarding color and texture. Large retaining walls will require strong and durable materials.

Another important issue for retaining walls is drainage. Choosing the best method of drainage will increase the strength of the wall. The wrong type of drainage can result in the walls eventual collapse. Sometimes proper drainage can be easily accomplished by simply creating holes in the wall. However, the structure can easily become damaged if the holes get clogged.

The best way to ensure your wall is built right, is to hire a professional foundation contractor who has experience constructing retaining walls on many different types of properties. A knowledgeable builder will evaluate every aspect of the project. You will get reliable advice regarding your options, which can save you considerable time and money. You will also have peace of mind knowing that your wall is sturdy and long-lasting.

Alkaline Skin Creams and Soaps May Damage Your Skin

Ultra Balm Founder Urges Public to Check the pH Level of their Skin Care Products

Clearwater, FL—The founder of Ultra Balm (www.ultrabalm.com), a natural skin care product designed to relieve dry skin, says that many soaps and skin creams on the market may actually make skin problems worse. The pH value of the cream or soap is said to be the determining factor.

The pH of a substance, which stands for “power” or “potential of Hydrogen”, is the measure from 0 to 14 of the acidity or alkalinity of the substance. A neutral substance such as distilled water has a pH of 7. The pH of any acid is below 7, and any alkali has a pH above 7.

“Healthy skin has what is called an 'acid mantle', a natural skin protection with a pH of 4.5 to 6,” says Vicki Gailzaid, the founder of Ultra Balm. “This slight acidity helps prevent skin problems by discouraging harmful bacteria and fungus. What many people don't realize is that many skin creams and all soaps are alkaline, which means they act to neutralize the acid mantle and remove your skin's natural protection.”

Gailzaid insists this information should be given up front by manufacturers. “Few skin care products or soaps today actually state on the packaging what the pH level is,” she points out. “They might say 'pH balanced', but that is a marketing ploy—balanced to what pH level? A pH is a number. They should say what the number is.”

Asked about her own products' pH, Gailzaid says, “As we state clearly in our product information, Ultra Balm is a healthy skin cream that maintains a pH of 6. This is ideal for preserving the skin's acid mantle and fighting off infection, preventing acne and other skin problems. We use natural ingredients such as aloe and lanolin, and many of our customers have found UltraBalm to be the best product for dry skin problems. We make it our priority to provide a healthy, effective product that uses the highest quality ingredients known for natural skin care.”

Building Cleaning Services Says Mold Removal May Reduce Infant Asthma Risk

LOS ANGELES: Building Cleaning Services, Inc. (BCS) (http://www.buildingcleaningservices.net), a company providing mold removal services for the Greater Los Angeles area, says that proper mold removal from residential homes can reduce the risk of asthma in infants. Approximately 7 million children in the U.S. have been diagnosed with asthma. The disease is a chronic respiratory condition that causes tightness in the chest, coughing and breathing difficulties due to swelling in the lung.

In a recent study partially funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), three types of mold were found to contribute to infant asthma: Aspergillus ochraceus, which produces food-contaminating mycotoxins (substances naturally produced by moulds and fungi that are normally present as some form of defense for the organism.), Aspergillus unguis, a less common species and Penicillium variabile (a type of mold). Molds grow where water is present, and are frequently found in homes damaged by water.

The 289 children involved in the study were 8 months of age when dust samples were collected from their homes. The NIEHS analyzed the dust for the 36 different types of molds listed in the Environmental Relative Moldiness Index (ERMI), as well as “endotoxin (a toxin kept "within" the bacterial cell and to be released only after destruction of the bacterial cell wall), house dust mite, cat, dog and cockroach allergens.” Following a second evaluation of the children at 7 years of age which included mold and aeroallergens skin prick testing for mold, 24% were diagnosed with asthma.

“It has been known for many years that mold is a hazardous substance that could potentially cause health issues in adults,” says Garrison Clarke, BCS Operations Manager. “The new NIEHS report clearly indicates that the health of all family members could be at risk when mold is present in a home.”

Clarke further states that there are various protocols that need to be followed when removing mold. The procedure that is used depends on how long the surfaces in a home have been wet. “Mold that has been growing for a week or more will require a more extensive removal process,” says Clarke.

More on the NIEHS study can be seen here: http://www.niehs.nih.gov/news/newsletter/2012/9/science-molds/index.htm

Aero & Marine Tax Professionals Help Manufacturer Win Tax Exemption on Jet Purchase

Aero & Marine Tax Professionals Assists Manufacturer With Sales Tax Exemption On Cessna Citation CJ4 Jet

SACRAMENTO, CA: Aero & Marine Tax Professionals (http://www.aeromarinetaxpros.com/), recently assisted a manufacturer in procuring a tax exemption on their purchase of aircraft, a Cessna Citation CJ4 jet.
An executive from the company stated: “We already owned a CJ3 and wanted to upgrade to a CJ4 to get a bit larger capacity plane with a bit longer range. Our experience with Aero & Marine Tax Professionals was outstanding! They sent us detailed information on the process of getting the sales and use tax exemption. They sent the forms quickly and answered any questions I had immediately. Throughout the whole process I always had access to their staff to make sure the forms were completely filled out and were there on a timely basis. When all the forms were completed and submitted to them, they notified us that they were filing for the exemption. And as of today, they informed us that the exemption has been granted. Their service has been outstanding, and we certainly got our dollars worth! We thank them for their excellent work. The only way to survive in racing is to know where all the money comes from and goes to. We would definitely recommend them to others, in fact we are adding a race team in North Carolina, so I will give the Aero & Marine information to them to follow up.”
Aero & Marine Tax Professionals founder and president, Tom Alston, stated: “There are lots of reasons that a company would want to own an aircraft in their line of work. In today's economic climate it is more important than ever to be able to legally avoid the sales and use tax on an aircraft purchase. And it is completely legal and our company has the expertise on how to do this successfully in the state of California. We've handled nearly 1,000 cases so far over the years and have never failed in one of them."
Aero & Marine Tax Professionals shows purchasers specifically how to avoid aircraft tax and vessel tax in California and to make certain the full value of their next aircraft, vehicle or vessel goes into their pocket--not the government's. They have successfully filed hundreds of tax returns with the California State Board of Equalization. Mr. Alston has also published many articles on sales and use tax. Air Charter Company Receives Sales Tax Exemption on Purchase of Cessna CJ3 525B Jet

SACRAMENTO, CA: Aero & Marine Tax Professionals, (http://www.aeromarinetaxpros.com/), recently helped an air charter company to obtain a tax exemption on the purchase of a Cessna CJ3 525B jet.

An executive from the charter company stated: “We are a part 135 charter operator, using the aircraft owned by private aircraft owners. So the purchase of this aircraft was a purchase by a private owner and it became a tool in our business. I first met Tom Alston at an air show in 2007. I was confident due to Aero & Marine's record and did not have any doubt about a successful outcome. They are well known for their professionalism and experience. I would absolutely recommend Aero & Marine to others. If I can convince someone to buy an airplane I will send them to Aero & Marine Tax Professionals.”

Tom Alston, founder of Aero & Marine Tax Professionals, stated: “Back in the old days the finance specialists just knew enough to send a client a copy of the appropriate regulations and hope the client would understand half of it. We don’t operate that way. As a specialist in our field we have extensive familiarity to be able to walk a client through the entire process involved with the California tax codes and obtaining a sales and use tax exemption on the purchase of an aircraft. And in today's economic climate, it is more important than ever for anyone to be able to realize those tax savings.”

SCARS…Why They Happen, Tips To Avoid Them, and How To Get Rid Of Them

By Dr. Darshan Shah, MD, FACS

Even the word SOUNDS terrible….SCARS! Sounds like something you want to get out of your life as soon as possible, like a child throwing a loud fit on the airplane, or a dead rat floating in your swimming pool!

But every time the skin is broken for any reason, traumatically or surgically, you WILL ALWAYS get a scar. There is no such thing as “no scar” surgery, or “my scar went away” unless you are a fetus still in the womb (research on intra-uterine surgery on a fetal pigs with cleft lips show they heal with no scar). The trick is to minimize the scar as much as possible by treating it aggressively WHILE it is healing, and to have the understanding that a scar can take a year or two to really fade. I tell all my patients, no matter how well your surgery is done, there is always a chance that you can develop a scar. The trick is to do everything you can to PREVENT IT, TREAT IT, and MINIMIZE IT.

PREVENTING A SCAR

There are many things that can make a scar worse that can sometimes be avoided, and sometimes can not. For example, people with dark skin, hair and eyes are prone to developing worse scars than people with lighter skin…and you can’t change your genetic makeup! Also certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, obesity, and scleroderma can cause scars to heal worse. Smoking is one of the worst possible things you can do before and after a surgical procedure. If you smoke, and you heal well, you just got lucky! Smoking has nicotine in it, which constricts blood vessels, and also carbon monoxide, which depletes your blood of the nourishment provided by oxygen. You should quit all nicotine products at least 6 weeks before your surgery, or else all bets are off! Certain surgeries also have a higher chance of healing problems than others. Any surgery where a flap of skin is developed (for example a tummy tuck procedure or a breast lift augmentation) needs extra special care to achieve good healing and minimal scars. Over activity immediately after a surgery is also bad for scars as it can pull on the scar and cause it to widen. A traumatic scar needs to be cleaned thoroughly and sometimes even cut out and sutured to get optimal healing.

There are different problems a scar can have, and each problem is treated differently. It is very important to understand that there are different types of unsightly scars that require different kinds of prevention and treatment. For the purposes of an organized discussion, scars can be divided up into groups that include: THICK SCARS, RED SCARS, BROWN SCARS, WHITE SCARS, WIDE SCARS, INDENTED SCARS, and POORLY HIDDEN SCARS.

THICK SCARS: There are certain people that are genetically prone to making “bad” scars. Believe it or not, these are actually people that are prone to over healing. A scar is basically a collection of collagen, blood vessels and epithelium (the outer layer of skin) trying to close a defect in the skin layer of the body. Some individuals tend to lay down too much collagen, creating a thick red scar. This type raised or scarring is called hypertrophic scarring. A keloid is an extreme type of hypertrophic scar that grows like a tumor…beyond the borders of the original break in the skin. I often find that many people mistake a hypertrophic scars for keloids, or even normal scars for keloids! Just because you think your scar could look better, doesn’t mean it is a keloid. Hypertrophic or keloid scars do not always occur consistently--a person prone to them can develop them with one surgery and not the next…or they can occur on certain parts of the body (the breast bone and scalp are especially prone) and not others. Hypertrophic scarring usually occurs in people that are genetically prone to it (African American, Asian, Italian, American Indian), basically almost all darker skin types. In fact, if you have blonde hair and blue eyes, you have a much better chance of healing scar with no thickness to it at all. In general, the amount of collagen you have in your scar is at its greatest in 6 weeks to 3 months after the skin injury (or surgery), so this is the time to really make sure you do whatever you can to keep the scar flat. Irritation to your scar (i.e. too much movement in the area or rubbing on the scar by tight clothing) can stimulate the scar to “over heal” and become hypertrophic. THE TREATMENT: Pressure, Silicone, and vitamin E. Constant pressure on the scar (either with tape or silicone gel sheeting) as well as massage in the first 6 months of healing can dramatically reduce the thickness of a scar. In general, I have my patients use a micropore tape for the first one to six months after surgery. Silicone gel sheets are also made which help to accomplish the same goal. These products work especially well in people who are generically prone to making hypertrophic or keloidal scars. Even old scars can be treated by pressure and massage, but remember it can take time. Finally, if all else fails and it has been over a year, consider laser resurfacing or laser removal (using a laser to reduce the thick area) or scar revision (a surgery to remove the scar, re-suture it, and “try again!”).

RED SCARS. All scars are initially red. This is a totally normal phenomenon and is due to increased blood flow to the area and extra blood vessels forming to bring all the good things in your blood to the area that needs to heal. More blood flow, means more redness, which is totally normal. In fact, the scar can sometimes even take on a purplish hue. It is important to realize that even in the best of circumstances, redness only starts going away after seven months. It can take a year or longer for it to totally fade. People who have trouble with redness for a longer period of time are usually light skinned, and are the same people whose entire face turns a bright red when you point out that their fly is open. Vitamin E and C can decrease the amount of red in a scar. If you are in a hurry, you can get rid of redness quicker with an IPL pulsed light treatment. But patience is usually the key, and with time it will get better. TIP: avoiding sun and tanning bed exposure also helps to reduce the redness of a scar.

BROWN SCARS: People with darker skin are also prone to produce more of the brown pigment called melanin. This deposits preferentially around scars, and causes what is known as hyperpigmentation of the scar. It can get worse with time and sun exposure. To minimize melanin deposition on a scar a few things can work: you can use a lightening cream such as hydroquinone, or you can peel the scar with products that contain onion extract or glycolic acid. It takes several months of this treatment to lighten a scar, and it may never totally lighten to the same color of the surrounding skin.

WHITE SCARS: Usually, a thin white scar is the goal of any surgery … unless your surrounding skin is not white. If the white really stands out (for example a scar around your areola), one option is to perform cosmetic tattooing of the scar. Scar camouflage is performed by matching the color of the surrounding skin with a tattoo done directly over the scar. It can take more than one treatment to adequately camouflage the scar, and it requires an artistic touch.

WIDE SCARS: Having thin skin, or just putting too much pull on a scar immediately after surgery, can cause a wide scar. Plastic surgeons are especially good at preventing this from happening by using special suturing techniques to distribute the tension on the scar and provide it with the most support. The classic example of a widened scar is the stretch marks a woman gets after pregnancy. Bad news for everyone that has stretch marks: there is NO GOOD TREATMENT for stretch marks. Unless the collagen can somehow be rebuilt from the inside out (science hasn’t figured that one out yet), your only chance is to remove the scar surgically. In plastic surgery, we call this an abdominoplasty (a tummy tuck). Any scar can become widened like a stretch mark. Too much tension on a scar after surgery (i.e. not resting!) during the critical first month of healing can lead to a scar widening. I like to use a special kind of tape to provide additional support to a scar during this first month. The tape helps to hold the scar together, and reminds you not to pull on it too much. If a scar still turns out to be wide, you can try an ablative laser (such as a CO2 or an Erbium laser), or have it revised (re-done) in surgery.

INDENTED SCARS: A scar that indents catches light and creates a shadow in such a way that it becomes very noticeable. This usually occurs because there is additional scar tissue underneath the scar that is attaching it to deeper structures such as muscle or bone. In the initial stages of scar formation you can massage a scar to prevent it from attaching to these deep structures. However if it has been more than a year that the scar is indented, you will need to have the scar surgically revised to make it better.

POORLY HIDDEN SCARS: Some scars, even though they have healed great, are just in a bad spot. Typical examples include the face or the décolleté. Sometimes the only thing you can do with these are camouflage them with makeup (there are several brands of camouflage makeup that are specially designed to cover up scars), or employ some very special plastic surgery techniques (a Z plasty is one example) to change the direction of, or to hide, these scars.

In summary, remember that with every scar on your body, the key is to prevent it from occurring in the first place. Be healthy, follow these tips, and be patient. Your scar will usually get better. If genetics and health are not on your side, there are many options available to help you get rid of the many kinds of scars out there…. work with your doctor to find out what will work the best for you!

Books On Writing

By Susan Mary Malone

People ask me all the time to recommend books on writing. I mean, all the time. As they struggle to slog through the ambiguous mud of writing well—and it most certainly feels that way up to a point—they search for ways to make the process easier, or at least help to make some sense of it. The real truth is, you’re pushing water uphill if you want this to fall into some sort of one, two, three scenario. As with all art, the path is winding and circular and includes hills and valleys and the deep recesses of the ocean floor. In other words, the one, two, three of book development doesn’t exist, so go ahead and lay that aside.

I’m not big on how-to books for writers. As a developmental editor, I’ve perused about a zillion of them, and most give you very little real help. They’re pedantic or mundane or sometimes downright scary in their recommendations. Or, they focus on something such as voice, and say everything else isn’t important, which leads to lots of writers using wonderful language with no story to tell. Most of the time, though, they’re just so basic that you’d have already gleaned the information by writing enough in the first place.

Often, these books do teach the basics. The result being that they teach you to write-by-numbers, which is what I see from many writers who have studied them.

All that said, however, good how-to books do exist. I’m a proponent of a very few good books, so what follows is the short and long list.

First off, for understanding language and style, grammar and syntax and sentence structure, Strunk and White’s The Elements of Style can’t be beat. It’s the old standby, which still eclipses all of the subsequent books on the topic, and applies equally well for all forms of writing—fiction, nonfiction, essays, etc.

On the marketing side, if you’re writing nonfiction, you have to have a bang-up proposal (which is quite different from your fiction synopsis). These proposals are their own beasts, and many a wonderful writer has pulled her hair out trying to get it right. Mike Larsen’s How to Write a Book Proposal is the best guide I know, and truly takes away the headache from all of this.

Next, we bring to life novels especially, but narrative nonfiction as well, through the use of scenes. When you break down a chapter, you do so by studying the scenes involved—where they hit, where they missed, what’s flat, what’s beside the point, etc. Jack Bickam’s Scene and Structure does a great job of clearing the page about this. What constitutes a scene? What are the elements involved? How do you get from point A to Point Z, and set up the next point A? Bickam’s book will help you make sense of that.

Noah Lukeman’s The Plot Thickens is more than the title conveys. Yes, it’s a how-to about plot. But it goes much deeper (which is where 99.9% of books concerning plot fail). What Lukeman explains from the get-go is true character development, and how that affects and defines plot. He gives great tips and exercises for asking questions of your characters that make them come alive—which is the point of all good fiction. This book is about story building, from the most basic level to depth instruction, by creating plot through characters. It’s the antithesis of write-by-numbers.

A book that covers the most important aspects of fiction (although it was written for screenplays) is Christopher Vogler’s The Writer’s Journey. It breaks down stories into plot points—why they’re important, how they further the story, where and why pacing lags—by illustrating characters’ journeys through plot. Its mythological structure likens the characters to archetypes, and why the trials and tribulations involved make for great storytelling. I must issue a disclaimer here, however. This is a very sophisticated writing book, and you have to have written a good deal to be able to relate to the discussion. I’ve had lots of writers come back confused from reading it, so I only recommend it once you’ve reached a certain point. Write first. Get critiqued or edited by top-notch book editing services. Study some of the other books. Write some more. Then read this one.

Read Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet for deciding if you really must undertake this endeavor. Because it is an ordeal. Finding your sea legs is hard, hard work. Unforgiving work. I cannot convey how many writers get back edited books and say, “Man, this looks like work!” It is. Rilke’s book will help you decide whether you’re in this for the long haul, or would be better off learning to fly jet airplanes.

My very favorite writing book ever is Sharon Creech’s Love That Dog. It is about finding your voice (although not at the exclusion of everything else!), which of course cannot be taught. Your voice is your voice—unique to you. It has to be uncovered, but it can be understood on this most basic of levels, which’ll help in the beginning to know what you’re looking for. And later, it’ll remind you why you do what you do. The book is so beautifully done. It’s a kid’s book, actually. Ms. Creech is a Newberry Medal winner. But DO NOT let that stop you. If you are to read one book on writing, let this be it.

Okay, there’s my list. Short. So use these books and they will help. But what will then help the most is for you to do two things: First and foremost, read. Read good books. I’m still amazed at how many writers tell me they don’t read (and it shows in their work). Forget today’s bestsellers. They won’t teach you much. Read instead the best books in your market. Read the classics. Read them all the time. The second thing is to write. Write, read, read, read. Write, read, read, read. That formula’ll work every time.

Now, take up your proverbial pen and write.

What Is Eczema?

by Vicki Gailzaid

According to Merriam-Websters: “Eczema: an inflammatory condition of the skin characterized by redness, itching, and oozing vesicular lesions which become scaly, crusted, or hardened” The word comes from a Greek word, “ekzein” which means “to break out or boil over”. Eczema is also sometimes called 'dermatitis', which is from another Greek word, “derma”, meaning skin. These two terms are often used interchangeably. The range of conditions covered by these two terms is large, but centers around symptoms such as inflamed and itchy skin that can develop into a rash when scratched.

For all that is known of the condition, the exact cause remains unknown. Thus, the cure also remains a mystery. However, eczema can be managed with proper treatment. Discovering and avoiding the things that make it worse as well as the treatment recommended by a competent dermatologist are the key to successfully dealing with eczema.

A dermatologist should be consulted if the condition is suspected, particularly because not every instance of dry skin is eczema. Exposure to cold and windy weather, as well as prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, can cause dry itching skin that have nothing to do with eczema. It’s just that skin quickly loses moisture in these conditions, so it needs hydration. Try a natural skin care product and see if with just dry skin care the condition clears up. It’s best to use a healthful skin cream that combines Vitamin A,D & E and Aloe Vera and is lanolin based. If the dryness persists, then you should consult a dermatologist; because it may be eczema.

Eczema afflicts men and women equally and impacts all races and ages. It generally falls into two categories: seborrheic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis. Seborrheic dermatitis is brought about by contact with irritants, such as chemicals, cleaning agents or perfumes. Atopic dermatitis is precipitated by allergies to a specific material, like nickel, chrome or rubber; it’s thought to be hereditary in families with a history of allergies. Atopic dermatitis is more common. Only about 3% of the general population becomes afflicted with seborrheic dermatitis.

However, there are variations of the disease. Some of the other conditions attributed to the eczema group are: dyshidrotic, nummular and herpticum eczema.

Dyshidrotic eczema, or hand eczema, usually affects the hands but also sometimes the soles of the feet and the sides of the toes and fingers. People afflicted with it get blisters that are small and clear and cause a burning or itching sensation. Often a rash develops with a symmetrical pattern. People who live in warmer climates are at a higher risk of the disease, but contrary to popular belief the disease is not related to sweat. The exact cause remains unknown, but there has been some evidence linking it to skin contact with metals or jewelry containing nickel.

Nummular eczema isn’t hereditary or allergic. It mainly affects the lower leg. It’s also known as “discoid” dermatitis due to the circular patches which appear, which are brown, red or pink and have a dry, cracked surface. The patches can get bumpy, blistered or crusted and extremely itchy. It can last for weeks or even months and then disappear all of its own.

Eczema herpeticum can occur when someone who has an eczema condition has skin-to-skin contact with someone who has the herpes simplex virus. Usually the herpes simplex virus revolves around cold sores near the mouth, but when it comes in contact with areas of pre-existing eczema then it can spread throughout the entire surface of the skin by using the eczema as a base. It is characterized by small skin blisters filled with yellow pus that appear on top of the usual eczema rash. The person can also experience high fever and flu-like symptoms. Unlike any other form of eczema, eczema herpticum can be fatal, eventually infecting the eyes, lungs, kidneys and other organs. Medical assistance must be obtained immediately for early treatment.

Eczema is the most common skin condition in the world, and its growth rate has increased in recent decades. Being able to spot it is a crucial first step. Then consult a dermatologist who can recommend a proper treatment. Make sure the treatment recommended doesn’t have any perfumes or chemicals that can act as an irritant. A lotion for dry skin as a treatment or in conjunction with it that is lanolin-based and uses natural ingredients, such as Aloe Vera and vitamins A, D & E will help to bring relief.

Beautologie Announces New Weight Loss Program with Special Pricing

Bakersfield, CA – Beautologie (http://www.beautologie.com), a leading cosmetic surgery and laser center with locations in Bakersfield, Fresno, and Malibu, today announced a new weight loss program with special pricing. The program was developed to help individuals trying to lose their last 15 to 30 pounds of weight and for clients who want to reach their goal weight before surgery.

“The best way to lose weight is a healthful, gradual progression toward your goal,” says Beautologie founder Dr. Darshan Shah. “Our weight loss program is conducted over a period of months, and is a non-invasive and highly effective method of shedding extra pounds.”

The Beautologie weight loss program starts with a full physical, followed by regular lab work, including blood work and an EKG every 3 months.  Program participants also receive B-12 shots at regular intervals, as well as Phentermine appetite suppressant tablets.

B-12 is a water-soluble vitamin used to boost energy and increase metabolism, which can help speed up the weight loss process. Phentermine was approved by the FDA in 1959, and controls the appetite by stimulating the hypothalamus gland to produce neurotransmitters.  The neurotransmitters act as signals of being either hungry or full.

“Losing weight before a surgery can facilitate the recovery process and speed up healing,” says Dr. Shah. “This program makes it easier for clients to lose weight and meet their target before the surgery takes place.”

The Beautologie weight loss program is supervised by a doctor and monitored by a nurse who helps clients with diet counseling. The program is being offered at the special price of $350 per month or $675 for three months, through March 31, 2013.

“January is the one of the best months to begin a new program to improve your health,” says Dr. Shah. “It's right after the holidays when we sometimes eat more than usual, and a great time to make New Year's resolutions. Taking off those last few pounds can make a big difference in your appearance and self-confidence.”

Dr. Darshan Shah, MD, FACS, is one of the industry’s most widely respected plastic and reconstructive surgeons. With plastic surgery offices in Bakersfield, Fresno and Malibu, California, he specializes in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.  His credentials include Board Certification by the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and specialized training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the prestigious Mayo Clinic. Young Stewartia Trees To Be Saved By Tree Transplanting Company

Two Stewartia Pseudocamellia To Be Saved From Being Discarded by Big Trees Inc.

SNOHOMISH, WA: Big Trees Inc., (http://bigtreesupply.com/), a large tree nursery in the Seattle area, has scheduled an upcoming project involving moving two young Stewartia Pseudocamellia trees that would otherwise be cut down at the site, an old garden that has been set for redevelopment. Big Trees Inc. will transplant the trees into the company’s tree nursery and then begin the search for a new home for the trees.

The Stewartia Pseudocamellia is a tree in the   family native to Japan and Korea. Small to medium size in height, typically reaching heights of 30’ or 45’, up to as high as 54’ at full growth. The two trees that Big Trees Inc. will be moving are younger in development, but still reach an impressive 18’ and are still growing. The process is to be supervised by Big Trees project manager and top tree transplanting specialist Todd Holmes, and is scheduled for early February. The timing of the project is ideal by the fact the transplant will take place mid-Winter.  It is best to transplant trees when they are dormant and the company has expressed confidence that the trees will undergo no harm and the move will be successful.

Nancy Penrose, owner of Big Trees Inc., stated: “These deciduous trees are really beautiful specimens. Their cream toned and textured bark and small star-like white flowers make this species very unique, and we’re very happy to rescue such beautiful trees. Hopefully we will be able to find a new home for them in time for their late spring bloom.”

Nancy Penrose is the owner of Big Trees Inc. (http://www.bigtreesupply.com), located in Snohomish, WA, in the Seattle area. The company is one of the largest tree nurseries in the Seattle area with over 120,000 trees available in over 300 varieties. They not only can deliver young trees but also mature trees in a wide range of sizes. Some types of trees available include spring flowering, deciduous, evergreen, and privacy trees. Julian Construction Recommends Action To Prevent Home Damage

Construction Company Warns Of Dangers Of Foundation Settlement and Gives Solutions

LOS ANGELES, CA: Julian Construction, (http://www.julianconstruction.com/), recently issued a list of recommendations for the handling of foundation settlement in a home. The company also included several factors a homeowner can watch for which indicate the condition. Julian Construction, a construction company specializing in foundation construction and repair, has been in the construction business for over 10 years.

Foundation settlement occurs due to weather conditions, soil issues or moisture problems, according to the statement issued by the company. Several factors indicate foundation settlement, such as wall cracks or difficulty opening and closing windows, etc. The company stressed that foundation settlement can be extremely dangerous, potentially resulting in the home’s collapse. To prevent settlement, the company recommended the use of piers, piles or caissons. After the condition has been found to be present by a competent and certified foundation inspector, it is recommended by the company that the appropriate supports for the foundation be installed so as to halt settlement.

Julian De La Torre, founder of Julian Construction, stated “If you are having foundation settlement problems, you can find out what type of shoring or strengthening is needed by consulting a foundation repair Los Angeles expert. Once your home and foundation has been properly inspected by a seasoned professional, all of your options will be explained so that you can make the best decision possible regarding your home. At Julian Construction we’ve helped many homeowners secure their foundation against settlement.”

Julian Construction owns its own company and is built on a “no middlemen” model – no salesmen, no subcontractors. When you work with Julian Construction you get the principals of the company and workers of Julian Construction under your home. The result is the highest quality work at affordable prices. Older Homes In Greater Danger Of Foundation Damage

Julian Construction Warns Homeowners With Older Homes To Have Foundation Inspected

LOS ANGELS, CA: Julian Construction, (http://www.julianconstruction.com/) warns homeowners with older homes to have their home foundations inspected. An older foundation becomes more likely to have foundation problems, according to the construction company. The company outlines several causes of foundation difficulties and factors that contribute to the condition.  The company’s full statement on the matter can be found on the company’s blog: http://julianconstruction.typepad.com/

Homes built 55 years ago or more are at risk of foundation problems, according to Shawn Kyles, an executive at Julian Construction. A foundation that has been incorrectly laid will seriously harm the longevity of the structure and lead to serious problems in the future. Homes built prior to 1940 have been noted to have foundations constructed with different building regulations and standards. Different soils also contribute to a weakening foundation, noted Kyles. Foundations built on clay soil, which expands and contracts, causes motion of the foundation. Some of the indicators of the condition noted were uneven floors, and windows and doors that won’t align. Kyles recommended an older home have its foundation inspected by a competent foundation inspector.

Julian De La Torre, founder of Julian Construction, stated: “There are many different styles of older homes that are still standing today and many are admired for their beauty and character. But the soundness of the foundation must be maintained, or some of these buildings may lose their structural integrity. For their preservation and for the safety of homeowners, the foundation should be inspected if it's suspected to be faulty.”

Julian Construction owns its own company and is built on a “no middlemen” model – no salesmen, no subcontractors.
