UltraBalm.com: What Parents Should Know About Infant Eczema

For parents with a new baby, having to deal with eczema can be stressful. Beyond the most likely cause, that it’s hereditary (there is an 80% chance of parents with the condition passing it on to their children), no one really knows precisely what causes it. Never knowing when or why it will develop, and in some cases not being curable, it can be hard for a parent whose child is now affected. Fortunately, there are ways to deal with it and of course, the more knowledge you have on the subject, the easier it is to confront.

The good news is that many babies grow out of eczema all by themselves, without any medical intervention needed. This can often occur well before the age of 5. The condition still needs to be watched when it occurs, as sometimes this is NOT the case and medical attention is then recommended. A large number of cases have occurred where the baby recovered from the condition as the body continued its normal growth cycle. What you need to know is how to make the condition tolerable for the baby and if medical attention really is needed or not.

You want to be able to recognize the signs of eczema. Knowing the symptoms will let you know if it’s A) only a false alarm, or B) actual eczema requiring attention. Infant eczema can range from a slight redness on a part of the skin, all the way to severe and irritating itching. It can appear just about anywhere: on the face, neck, chest, belly or (most often) at the creases on the back of the elbows and knees. Eczema appearing on a baby’s scalp is called “cradle cap” and looks like greasy, patchy skin that comes off in scales.

The most important factors to consider for preventing infant eczema include moisturizing with a dry skin treatment, nutrition, hygiene, and allergy awareness and prevention. Most infant eczema cases are identified as atopic eczema, meaning it can develop an allergic reaction very shortly within contact of the allergic substance. If any sudden reaction comes on, take note of the changes right before that which could have triggered it. Infant eczema can even be triggered by food allergies, most notably dairy. If the baby is breastfeeding then what the mother is eating will be a factor, so you may want to keep a journal of changes in food and other things around the house. If eczema develops on the baby’s belly then you can suspect something in the baby’s clothes or with the laundry detergent, since this is the largest area of fabric contact. All of these can be signs of atopic eczema.

Same as with adults, the worst of the problem is not the eczema itself but the scratching. Scratching which brings about wet or oozing sores is likely to bring on infection. “Staph” infections are common when this happens. Any eczema lesions which look different or unusual should be treated right away by a competent medical professional.

The obvious thing to do is to prevent scratching. Eczema robs the skin of moisture, creating dry itchy skin and leading to scratching, which leads to worsening conditions of the skin. One solution is to add baby oil to the infant's bath water. As soon as the baby gets out of the bath, pat the skin dry, paying extra attention to drying the legs without rubbing. Then quickly apply a very mild unscented baby lotion to take advantage of the baby's open pores after the warm bath, which is the best time for moisture to be absorbed.  When this is done before bedtime, the infant is more relaxed and can more easily sleep through the night.

Also, the infant's room should be kept humid.  Keep the heat turned down and if the baby gets cold, add clothing rather than turn the heat back up. Pure cotton clothing is recommended for the infant with eczema.

A natural skin care moisturizer is very helpful. For a baby with eczema you want a skin balm that is completely natural and will not cause any kind of unforeseen adverse reactions. Stick with dry skin care creams that are unscented, and its best if they are lanolin-based, and contain Vitamin E & aloe. A good lotion for dry skin with natural ingredients can sometimes clear up the condition in a short time. A cream to stop the scratching can be the most effective treatment, as then the baby does not experience discomfort and isn’t ever laid open to infection. This gives an excellent chance at a completely healthy and normal life, which is what any parent wants for their child.

Replacing a Foundation

by Shawn Kyles

Replacing a foundation can be a complicated and involved process depending on the size of the structure, its location and the extent of the damage.

Fully understanding the cause of your foundation problem is the first step in the replacement process. There are many reasons why foundations fail. Bad design, poor soil conditions and moisture issues are some of the more common causes of foundation instability and collapse.

Examples of an improperly designed foundation include inadequate support and reinforcement, cement that hasn’t been cured correctly and a foundation that is too thin. Poor soil conditions typically involve soil that expands when wet and contracts when dry. Plumbing leaks and inadequate drainage can also create havoc with a foundation.

Whether the problem is design, soil or moisture, the result will be foundation settlement. Indicators of settlement include wall cracks and sloping floors, as well as doors and windows that won’t open or close properly

Resolving these underlying issues before replacing your current foundation is critical in order to prevent future foundation deterioration.

Replacing a foundation typically involves replacing both the foundation walls and cement slab. In some cases, the first floor of the structure may need to be removed as well.

When replacing foundation walls, the house will need to be lifted several feet above the foundation. Your utilities will need to be turned off, and your water and sewer lines shut down. A trench will need to be dug around your home and shored in order for the cripple walls to be removed. After the cripple walls have been taken out, your basement slab can be removed.

If the dirt under the slab wasn’t properly compacted, it may need to be excavated and replaced.

New cement walls will need to be poured and given time to cure. Sometimes steel beams or similar types of reinforcement may be necessary to provide additional support for your home. In some situations, more extensive temporary support may be needed during the project, especially with structures that have more than one floor.

Once the new slab has been laid, underground utilities will need to be brought up and reconnected. The excavation around the walls will require filling and proper grading as well.

At this point, the house can be put back on the foundation. Any remaining utilities will need to be reconnected, and the last interior and exterior repairs completed.

Depending on the extent of the work that needs to get done, you may be able to live in your home while the foundation is being replaced. An experienced foundation repair expert can tell you how long the job will take and what to expect at each stage of the project.

Replacing a foundation is a worst-case scenario when it comes to foundation damage. Regular home inspections will often uncover foundation problems before they become serious. Correcting these issues early-on can save you the time and expense of a full foundation replacement. If you have any concerns about your current foundation, contact a knowledgeable foundation contractor and request a free inspection. The sooner you start any necessary repairs, the better.

Installation Of A Retaining Wall May Prevent Foundation Damage

Julian Construction Inc Advises Homeowners to Get Educated on the Use of Retaining Walls

LOS ANGELES, CA: Julian Construction Inc., (http://julianconstruction.com/) a construction company servicing the Greater LA Area, has advised the public on the needs of retaining wall construction to stop soil erosion and prevent foundation damage.

A retaining wall is a stabilizing structure built to stop erosion and the downward movement of soil on a slope. To raise awareness on this process, in the interest of preventing foundation damage in homes, Julian Construction presented an article to homeowners giving the reasons why a retaining wall may be needed, and listing some of the different kinds that would be used for different home situations. The full text of the article can be found here: http://julianconstruction.typepad.com/julian-construction-blog/2013/02/buildi...

Shawn Kyles of Julian Construction stated that a retaining wall is commonly built to stop soil movement on a hillside, to create more utilizable space in a yard, and to prevent soil movement from weakening a foundation. There are four kinds of retaining walls: gravity retaining walls, which depend on their own significant weight to keep soil from moving; anchored walls, which are restraining walls constructed using cables (usually extremely strong steel) that are anchored into the soil or rock behind the wall; cantilever walls, which are used to hold back a large amount of soil; sheet piling walls, which can be made from wood, vinyl or steel planks, and are used in places where the space is tight and the soil is soft. The company stressed that a homeowner should consult a specialist to determine which type of retaining wall is needed for a specific situation.

The company urged homeowners to get an inspection from a knowledgeable contractor to find out if a retaining wall is needed and what kind would best suit the situation. “Building a retaining wall”, stated Julian Construction founder Julian De La Torre, “will ensure peace of mind for you and your family, because you know that the soil around your home will be stable, and this will prevent it from causing any problem with your foundation. Foundation repair costs can sometimes be avoided with a retaining wall.”

Julian Construction owns its own company and is built on a “no middlemen” model – no salesmen, no subcontractors. Julian Construction Speaks Out On Danger Of Foundation Settlement

Construction Company Highlights Indicators For And Remedies Of Foundation Settlement

LOS ANGELES, CA: Julian Construction Inc., (http://julianconstruction.com/) a foundation construction and repair company in the Greater LA Area, recently sent out a warning to homeowners advising on the settling of a house foundation, and the effects it can have on a home. Foundation settlement is caused by weather conditions, soil issues, or moisture problems that then cause a foundation to settle.

The company urged homeowners contact a foundation contractor to receive a safety inspection of their home if foundation settlement is suspected, before foundation repairs are needed. The company also recommended a method that could be used to remedy foundation settlement. The company’s full report can be found here: http://julianconstruction.typepad.com/julian-construction-blog/2013/01/preventing-foundation-settlement-with-piers-piles-and-caissons.html

In order to prevent foundation settlement, the company recommends the use of piers, piles or caissons to strengthen a foundation. Piers are steel pipes driven into the soil and connected to the foundation. Piles are used to either absorb the weight of the structure or to block soil and water, and can be built using wood, concrete and composite materials. Caissons are a type of deep foundation used when soil conditions are extremely poor or the structure involved is large and heavy, and are built by drilling a large, subterranean shaft. According to the company, it takes a trained foundation inspection specialist to determine which of these three methods of foundation reinforcement must be used, and in what manner they must be installed.

Julian De La Torre, founder of Julian Construction, stated: “There are a number of things to watch for with house settling. Wall cracks, difficulties in opening and closing windows, and sloping floors are a number of common ones. If you notice these then you can suspect you are having foundation settlement problems, and you can find out what type of shoring or strengthening is needed by consulting a foundation repair expert. Once your home and foundation has been properly inspected by a seasoned professional, all of your options will be explained so that you can make the best decision possible regarding your home.”

Storing Trees During Construction Or Remodeling

by Nancy Penrose

During construction or remodeling, it is important to protect big trees and shrubs from construction damage. Broken branches, torn bark and other types of wounds can weaken trees and make them more susceptible to disease. Root damage can prevent the tree from absorbing water and vital nutrients. Changes in grading can have an adverse impact of the health of your plants, as well as excavation work around the building. A plant’s health can also be impacted by the addition of sidewalks, driveways and patios.

It can take many years before any damage from construction becomes apparent. Early leaf dropping, leaf yellowing, wilting, fewer leaves, and dead branches, along with changes in flowering and seed production, can be signs of plants that have been damaged during a construction project.

Before your construction project begins, conduct a thorough inspection of the foliage on your property. Determine which trees and shrubs you would like to protect. Direct foot traffic and equipment routes away from the foliage with fencing and signage. Make sure your barriers also protect the plant’s root system.

If you are intending to plant new trees and shrubs after the project is completed, you can protect the soil from damage with layers of wood chips. The chips will help prevent soil compaction, which can suffocate roots.

In some cases, the extent of the project may require the site to be cleared. Site clearing can result in the loss of valuable and irreplaceable plants. It can also cause damage to remaining foliage that lose their sun and wind protection.

An often overlooked solution to site clearing is removing and storing trees and shrubs on a temporary basis until the construction project has been completed.

Our company recently retrieved six large trees and a variety of shrubs, including large Japanese maple dissectums, large lilac trees and a large specimen azalea, from a neighborhood property under development. Several pieces of equipment were used to gain access to the property and trees. After carefully preparing the plants and trees for moving, we brought them back to our nursery for storage.

With proper care, the plants are able to remain in storage for up to three years. When the construction project is finished, the trees and shrubs will be replanted.

Transporting trees that are large can require several people and various types of equipment. Properly preparing the root ball before the move is critical. Root balls need to be professionally dug, wrapped and drum laced correctly to ensure survivability. Depending on the size of the tree, root balls can be 15 feet or more in width and over 5 feet deep.

After wrapping, the root ball needs to be kept moist. Once the tree is replanted in its new location, it is critical that the tree get automated drip irrigation for a minimum of a year.

If you’re planning a residential or commercial construction project and would like to save the trees and shrubs nearby, removing and storing them may be one of your best options. Contact a big tree specialist to get valuable advice on how to preserve and protect your landscape before the project begins.

Preventing Tooth Decay With Sealants

by Michael Vold, DDS, JD

Despite the many proactive measures that can be taken to prevent tooth decay, a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows cavities in children between the ages of two and five increasing 15.2% from 1988-1994 to 1999-2002. It has also been reported that approximately 20% of U.S. children and teens have untreated cavities.

According to a recent article in the New York Times, not only is tooth decay in young children on the rise, more preschoolers are showing up at dental offices with cavities needing extensive dental procedures, including dental surgery requiring anesthesia. Some dental offices have reported children as young as 2 with six to ten cavities at a time.

Maintaining good oral health at every stage of life is vital. Taking care of your teeth not only prevents future tooth loss, it reduces the risk of many other diseases, such as periodontitis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and even osteoporosis or to have to implant teeth. Learning more about cosmetic dentistry, you can know the different solutions available to fix dental problems.

Healthy eating is one way to minimize the possibility of cavities. Avoid foods that contain sugar as much as possible. Regular brushing and flossing is also important when it comes to oral health and whitening of teeth. Another effective way children and teens can protect their teeth from decay is with dental sealants.

Sealants have had American Dental Association (ADA) approval for over 35 years. Made of tooth-colored acrylic, they fill a tooth’s pits and grooves with a protective covering. Dental sealants prevent tooth decay by shielding teeth from the mouth bacteria, acids and sugars that come from food particles.

Dental sealants are generally applied to permanent molars, which start growing when a child is around six years of age. Permanent molars continue to push through the gums until a child is 12 or 13 years of age. These back teeth are often the hardest to reach and keep clean, even with regular brushing. The sealant is applied to the chewing portion of the molar, where decay and cavities are most likely to occur.

Sealants have also been used on baby teeth when necessary, and for pits and grooves in adult teeth.

The procedure for applying dental sealants is simple and easy. First, the teeth are thoroughly cleaned using a rotating brush and paste. Depending on the type of sealant that is used, an acidic liquid may need to be applied to the teeth to prepare them for the sealant. Once the solution has dried, it is washed off. Next, the dental sealant is painted onto to the teeth, filling any crevices, pits and grooves. As the sealant dries, it hardens, forming a protective coating over the teeth.

Sometimes a light is used to speed up the drying process. The entire procedure takes only a few minutes and is completely painless.

Types of dental sealants include resin, Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC) and fluoride-containing sealants.

Sealants can last from five to ten years. They are also easily replaced if they become worn or chipped. If you have young children and are concerned about tooth decay and cavities, ask your dentist about dental sealants, one of the best ways of insuring your child’s oral health.

Northbrook Court Dental Recommends Dental Sealants for Children

Northbrook, Illinois – Northbrook Court Dental Associates (http://www.northbrookcourtdental.com) says children and teens can protect their teeth from decay and cavities by using dental sealants. The fluoride-releasing sealants prevent tooth erosion caused by the sugars, acids and bacteria from food particles.

“Children can be extremely susceptible to tooth decay, especially when they eat sweets on a regular basis,” says Dr. Michael Vold, founder of Northbrook Court Dental Associates. “Dental sealants are an easy and effective way of prevent decay and related tooth problems.”

Dental sealants are applied in a thin coat to the chewing surfaces of a child’s new molars after they have broken through the gums. The sealant fills in the tooth’s pits and groves. These “fissures” can be extremely deep, and are often the most difficult area of the mouth to keep clean, even with regular brushing and flossing.

The short and simple procedure begins by cleaning the tooth with paste and a rotating brush. The tooth is then covered with an acidic solution. After the gel has dried, it is washed off. The sealant is then painted onto the tooth, where it quickly dries and hardens. Sometimes a light is used to speed up the drying process. The entire procedure takes approximately one to two minutes per tooth.

Dental sealants are made of tooth-colored acrylic, which makes them virtually unnoticeable, even when the child is talking, laughing or smiling. Although sealants can last for up to ten years, the protective covering should be checked periodically by a dentist.

Sealants can also be used on baby teeth with deep crevices, and to fill in pits or grooves on teeth in other parts of the mouth.

For more information on dental sealants for children and teens, visit the Northbrook Court Dental Associates website at http://www.northbrookcourtdental.com, or call the office today at 847-272-2900.

Tax Firm Assists Aircraft Company With Tax Exemption

Aero & Marine Tax Professionals Helps Client Secure Tax Exemption On Antique Piper Airplane

SACRAMENTO, CA: Aero & Marine Tax Professionals, (http://www.aeromarinetaxpros.com/), an aircraft and marine vessel tax specialist company, recently assisted an aircraft manufacturing company in obtaining a tax exemption on an older Piper airplane. The plane will go in the aircraft company’s museum, located in Victoria, Texas. Aero & Marine Tax Professionals represented the company before the California Board of Equalization (BOE) and assisted in preparing documentation for the case, which concluded successfully for the company in receiving an exemption on California state sales tax.

An executive from the aircraft manufacturing company stated: “The aircraft was one of the last of its kind, and I wanted to put it in my museum. It will eventually end up back in Pennsylvania. I got a notice from the California government wanting me to pay taxes on the plane. I didn’t receive it in California, and it was even outside California when I closed the transaction. Aero & Marine Tax Professionals were recommended to me by a friend of mine. The experience went pretty well from there. This wasn’t our first rodeo. As a matter of fact, it turned out that this airplane didn’t even qualify for the California tax to begin with, it truly was an exempt airplane. Rather than me fight with them directly, it was easier to have Aero & Marine do it. I would recommend them to others.”

Tom Alston, founder and owner of Aero & Marine Tax Professionals, stated: “This case was very interesting. It isn’t everyday we work with an antique plane like this. But in all other respects it was a standard case. We’re happy the company got its sales tax exemption."

Aero & Marine Tax Professionals shows purchasers specifically how to avoid aircraft tax and vessel tax in California and to make certain the full value of their next aircraft, vehicle or vessel goes into their pocket--not the government's. They have successfully filed hundreds of tax returns with the California State Board of Equalization. Mr. Alston has also published many articles on sales and use tax. Aero & Marine Tax Professionals Help real Estate Company Get Tax Exemption on Plane

Cessna Plane Exempt From California Sales Tax Due To Efforts Of Tax Specialists Firm

SACRAMENTO, CA: Aero & Marine Tax Professionals, (http://www.aeromarinetaxpros.com/), an aircraft and marine tax specialist company in California, recently assisted a southern California real estate business in obtaining a tax exemption on the purchase of a Cessna airplane.

Richard, an executive from the real estate company stated: “The business problem we were trying to solve with purchasing an airplane at the time was being able to find properties. I needed to be able to be on my own schedule, and go to communities that might not have a commercial airport but did have a private airport. I have purchased a few aircraft along the way, but had never pursued an exemption since those aircraft were for personal use. This one was a more expensive airplane and it met the criteria with the business use for me to not have to pay the California use tax. I found out about Aero & Marine Tax Professionals through an email. So I followed the information that they gave me, and their follow-up was great. In the end it was all worthwhile, as the BOE awarded me the sales tax exemption. When I called I always got the information I needed. Both of us were busy, but we got it done. I would most definitely recommend Aero & Marine to others.”

Tom Alston, founder and owner of Aero & Marine Tax Professionals, stated: “If you do not seek a sales tax exemption when it is possible, you will end up paying a large chunk of money to the state that could have been avoided. We find that many companies who contact us do not know that you can legally avoid sales tax on an aircraft purchase. Those who have worked with us and received a sales tax exemption know better.”

Building Cleaning Services Helps Companies Raise Hygiene Standards in Office

LOS ANGELES, CA: Building Cleaning Services (BCS) (http://buildingcleaningservices.net/), an office cleaning and mold removal company servicing the Greater Los Angeles area, says companies should regularly get a “deep clean” of their offices to combat potentially unhealthy environments, in light of recent studies.

According to one study published last year in the journal PLoS One, office workers are subject to bacterial contamination. The study, entitled “Office Space Bacterial Abundance and Diversity in Three Metropolitan Areas,” reported that people “spend their entire working day, eight or more hours, inside office buildings sometimes without going outdoors the entire day. Employees in crowded buildings often share workstations, computers, chairs, restrooms and many other common areas that have been found to harbor a wide spectrum of microorganisms.”

BCS is an indoor environmental cleaning company specializing in using techniques and equipment that can enhance the health of the work environment.  It has a large clientele of corporations with high quality equipment that recognize the need for specialist cleaning. BCS is also renowned for its black mold remediation and water damage restoration work. http://www.yelp.com/biz/building-cleaning-services-glendale

The study funded, in part, by the University of San Diego, found that a larger number of bacteria are developed during an average day's work than has been expected. Bacteria from human skin, mucus membranes, and large amounts of bacteria from soil and plants were all detected in tested work environments. An independent study in Canada found similar results, and additionally noted that poor office hygiene can cause sickness to spread among employees.

Allen Eames, a BCS Janitorial Operations Manager said a professional building cleaning service can become very important. “We do a full analysis of a client’s needs, including the layout of the building and all of the different surfaces and contents of each room. Then we do a full initial cleaning, and whether it is a one-time or regularly scheduled cleaning, we aim to increase the level of hygiene in the workplace.”

As one client remarked: “Over my years in business, I have experienced many janitorial and maintenance services, but none have measured up to the services” of BCS. “The times that I have called BCS have always been refreshing because they make you feel like you are the one and only client.”

BCS also specializes in mold removal and water damage handling services for the Greater Los Angeles area, and other areas of Southern California. Established in 1997, they have over a decade of experience as a company with fast service, high professionalism and a high work ethic. BCS is certified by the Institute of Inspection and Cleaning and Restoration and Environmental Testing & Technology. Big Trees Inc Transports Trees to the San Juan Islands

Tree Transplanting Company Takes Trees to New Location across the Puget Sound

SEATTLE, WA: Big Trees Inc., (http://bigtreesupply.com/), tree nursery and tree transplanting company operating in the Seattle area, recently undertook a large project transplanting several large trees from Redmond to the San Juan Islands. The San Juan Islands are an archipelago in the northwest corner of the contiguous United States between the US mainland and Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, and part of the state of Washington. The company assisted a customer moving the trees to his new home in the islands, including transporting the trees across the Puget Sound to their new location.

The trees were moved because the customer was moving to a new home and wanted to enjoy the trees at their new home. Over 10 large trees were moved, some of them over 20’ tall, some more than 10’ wide; and in total the trees took up the surface area of a 40’ flatbed trailer and another large truck. The trees included Birch, Styrax, and Japanese Maple trees. Big Trees Inc. arrived at the site of the trees in Redmond, carefully removed them and transported them first by road, next by boat over the Puget Sound itself. Arriving at their final destination, Big Trees unloaded the trees and successfully finished the transplanting process at the new home in the San Juan Islands.

As Big Trees Inc. Project Manager, Todd Holmes stated: “Who says you can’t take your trees with you? Not us here at Big Trees!”

Nancy Penrose, owner of Big Trees Inc., also stated: “The project involved a lot of care, transplanting trees this large and with the delicacies of where the trees had to go. But it was very well done and the trees are doing fine in their new home. We will be following up with the customer again to see how they are doing and to ensure they are getting enough water. An automated drip irrigation system is integral to the trees thriving. It goes to show, no matter how big the tree is, if our Project Manager says it can be done, it can be done.”

Nancy Penrose is the owner of Big Trees Inc. (http://www.bigtreesupply.com), located in Snohomish, WA, in the Seattle area. The company is one of the largest tree nurseries in the Seattle area with over 120,000 trees available in over 300 varieties. They not only can deliver young trees but also mature trees in a wide range of sizes. Some types of trees available include spring flowering, deciduous, evergreen, and privacy trees. The company also does tree transplanting including large trees. Their blog can be seen at http://www.bigtreesupply.com/blog/

5 Things That Make A Book Compelling

by Susan Mary Malone

It’s funny what draws us to a book. But even those we wait for with great anticipation often disappoint. More to the point is what causes one to take hold of us, to think about long after turning the final page. The characters, the story, the voice; that unique something, which grabs us and won’t let go.

Editors are notoriously jaded. We read, after all, tons of manuscripts and stories. A good buddy who’s a VP at Kensington, and one of the most irreverent people I’ve ever met (and who will remain nameless here so he doesn’t shoot me), confessed that he cried watching Titanic in the theater. It still gives me a chuckle today. Although a softy at heart, it literally takes the Earth moving for a story to get to him.

And as a novel editor, I understand entirely. You can’t read as much as we do and be moved all the time or we wouldn’t get anything done! And yes, the old, “Ya gotta grab ‘em on page one,” applies. The hook is vital. Editors know on the first page whether this is for them. The company line is that they read the first fifty pages. In some parallel universe! That’s why writers come to me daily, saying that they’ve received rejection after rejection that says, “This just wasn’t compelling enough for me.” Agents mean that literally.

Yet and still, stories grab us for so many reasons. And often, they don’t fit any sort of mold.

I’m a big John Nichols fan. If nothing else (and there’s always a boatload else), I know I’m gonna laugh myself off the chair. On Top of Spoon Mountain, his latest, had me rolling. And it’s not a funny premise—an aging, infirm man who’s as dysfunctional as they come, the fruit of that bearing out with his grown children and disastrous romantic relationships, simply must climb the mountain of his youth (preferably with said children in tow) to prove, well, whatever it is aging men must prove, no matter how they couch it in “family.” A slim novel, it’s the antithesis of the book and film that made him famous, The Milagro Beanfield War, which rambled for 800 or so pages and made me laugh on every one of them. The thing about Nichols is that under all the comedy, lies the essence of what makes us people, community, cohabitants of this planet Earth.

I recently finished editing a slender, literary work that just haunts me. Almost all the action occurred in the beginning. A huge crash, actually, seen by the three narrators, none of whom were involved in the event, although each reacted in character. And each stayed in character for the remainder of the story, which was one of quiet desperation for all, leading to the climax that took my breath away. It will haunt you too, once published.

So what is it that “compels” us to get involved in a book? To not put it down?

1. That hook. That thing up front that’s different, unique, too funny not to keep on reading, so poignant without being purple that it grabs us. Done well, the hook doesn’t have to be about major crashes or aliens or the murder of a celebrity, although McCarthy’s The Road, which opens after the Earth burns up, the reason for which isn’t even of great importance, will clutch you by the throat and not let go. Yet, as with all McCarthy’s work, the hook isn’t even what forces you to keep reading.

2. The Voice does. And that term is so nebulous, it’s tough for writers to grasp. Voice isn’t something you’re born with, really. It’s something you hone from years and years and years of learning your craft. Most new writers imitate the authors they love. And that’s actually fine. It’s like trying on different dresses to find those that fit your body best. And you’ll never really sound like the authors you emulate anyway. They’ve already spent those years and decades perfecting that voice. But you can pick out a Conroy, a Nichols, an Atwood, and of course this list could go on from here to eternity.

3. The Story. Well of course, you say, the plot’s the thing! But again, story in novel development isn’t as easy to define as the beginning, middle, and end. What I see most often from new writers is a rambling, sprawling work where the story exists, but it’s buried deep under all the verbiage and didactic opinion. It’s tough, as a writer, especially learning your sea legs, to not let your characters and story be just mouthpieces for your personal opinions. Those will always be there, but that beating-your-reader-over-the-head with how the world should be is the biggest way to turn said reader off. We all have opinions. I’m quite certain the world would be a much better place if I were Queen of Earth. But that doesn’t at all stop me from hearing what others think, seeing life in a different way. And to do that, a writer has to paradoxically put predilections aside, at least as much as possible, and speak to the human condition in an offering, rather than a preaching way.

4. Characters who seem real, but so compelling we want to know them, to bring them into our worlds, if just for the time. Even if they’re evil. They intrigue and interest us. They can exasperate us—but only to a point, especially in a protagonist. They breath from the pages. We want them to succeed (or not! based on the author’s intent). Or we want to rise to their heights.

5. The Human Condition. Across all genres, the best books speak to something within us. The more universal this is, the more a book succeeds (even if the rest of it is pretty much crap!). The biggest bestseller in recent years (spawning its own industry), plugged into women’s dissatisfaction in their love lives. Who knew! LOL. (Okay, so actually, as a developmental editor, I’ve seen this trend rise for well over a decade.) None of the above really mattered—the book hit the hot spot (no pun intended). On the other hand, it’s no quandary why dystopian novels have been all the rage—we live in precarious times.

All of these of course deserve much deeper attention. I’ve written entire articles on tiny points of each one. But in toto, they’re what cause a book to worm its way under the skin and call to us when we put it down. To make me reach the end and say, “I wish I’d written that.” And thank all the writing gods we still have authors who do that!

Producer Norm Novitsky Urges Public to Really Learn About the Bill of Rights

(LOS ANGELES, CA) - Film producer and director Norm Novitsky (http://www.normnovitsky.com), who is currently working on a feature film entitled “In Search of Liberty” about the U.S. Constitution, is urging the public to learn more about the Bill of Rights and recommended a list of online sources.

Norm Novitsky stated "We have a lot of dialogue and controversies going on today about some of the issues contained in the Bill of Rights. One example is the Sandy Hook tragedy and the response of the President and Senator Feinstein urging more restrictions on gun ownership. Yet if you read the Second Amendment it says that the rights of the people to own guns shall not be infringed. That means what it says and its meaning is pretty clear. It's important to understand why the Founders felt that needed to be in the Bill of Rights, and to even understand what has happened in other countries where gun ownership has been banned. And it's even important to understand the eventual goal of people urging gun bans and restrictions, which I believe is clearly to ban guns altogether. The argument for more stringent gun control laws by gun control advocates is weak if not entirely inaccurate, case in point the city of Chicago. Chicago having one of the highest rates in crimes, lethal or otherwise, by the use of firearms, yet has one of the toughest gun control laws nationally. That's just one example but it underscores why it is important to learn about the Bill of Rights, this important legacy left to us by the Founding Fathers."

Novitsky recommended the following online sources for learning about the Bill of Rights:

http://www.constitutionfacts.com/us-constitution-amendments/bill-of-rights/

http://memorize.com/bill-of-rights

http://www.historyforkids.org/learn/northamerica/after1500/government/billofrights.htm

http://civilliberty.about.com/od/historyprofiles/f/what_is_bill.htm

Norm Novitsky's current film project, “In Search of Liberty” (http://www.insearchofliberty.com), is the story of a family that gets taken on a series of wild adventures by a statesman from America’s past. Key aspects of the Constitution are presented throughout the film, as well as the real reasons behind attempts to destroy Second Amendment rights. The film’s creative team includes writer/producer Tom Solari and director/producer Eric Sherman. Novitsky is producing the film through his production company In Search Of Liberty LLC

“The buzz and dialogue regarding the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights continues to escalate,” says Novitsky. “When you really understand this amazing document, you can begin to better take control of your life and protect your liberties."

Producer Norm Novitsky Recommends List of Sources of Study on U.S. Constitution

(LOS ANGELES, CA) - Film producer and director Norm Novitsky (http://www.normnovitsky.com), who is currently working on a feature film entitled “In Search of Liberty” about the U.S. Constitution, is urging the public to study about the Constitution using books and online sources.

Norm Novitsky stated "Unfortunately today schools don't teach much about the Constitution any more. And so people don't realize that the Founding Fathers were extremely well educated men, who thoroughly studied history and how different governmental systems had worked in the past. I believe this has led to a widespread lack of knowledge about and understanding of the Constitution, leading some to think it is outdated, which it definitely is not. Being uninformed of your liberty and rights under our Constitution will not be an excuse for why you let the door open to tyranny and enslavement. The Constitution is still as relevant today as the day it was ratified. It is this historically, magnificent document that has protected its citizens from the likes of fascism, socialism and communism. Norm encourages people to study about the Constitution online, and there are quite a few excellent books on the subject, and I want to urge people to learn more about it."

Novitsky recommended the following online sources for learning about the Constitution:

http://www.constitutionfacts.com/

http://free.ed.gov/subjects.cfm?subject_id=19

http://www.enchantedlearning.com/history/us/documents/constitution/

Novitsky recommend the following books on the Constitution:

"The Making of America: The Substance and Meaning of the Constitution" by W. Cleon Skousen

"The People's Guide to the United States Constitution" by Dave Kluge

Norm Novitsky's current film project, “In Search of Liberty” (http://www.insearchofliberty.com), is the story of a family that gets taken on a series of wild adventures by a statesman from America’s past. Key aspects of the Constitution are presented throughout the film, as well as the real reasons behind attempts to destroy Second Amendment rights. The film’s creative team includes writer/producer Tom Solari and director/producer Eric Sherman. Novitsky is producing the film through his production company, In Search Of Liberty LLC.

"The wisdom contained in the Constitution has contributed to the fact that the U.S. has become the most prosperous country in the history of the world. If people forget that and try to make the U.S. into something else, it will not be as prosperous and we will lose many of our cherished freedoms," concluded Novitsky.

Big Trees Inc Releases New Video Introduction To Company

Tree Transplanting Company Releases Video With Basics Of Transplantation Process

SEATTLE, WA: Big Trees Inc., (http://bigtreesupply.com/), a tree transplanting and tree nursery company in the Northwest US, recently released a video introduction on the first page of the company website. The video introduces the company and gives some of the basics of tree transplanting, as well as a few points on whether a tree is eligible for transportation or not. The video was also launched on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=K6pU1aV-GnI

The video introduces the company and what makes them unique in the tree transplanting field. It also gives data on the basics of their process to transplant trees, such as the care needed in transplanting a tree, the size needed for a tree rootball, and the need for proper irrigation of a tree after it’s transplanted. The company also clarified one of the big differences between it and other landscape operations – Big Trees has the equipment and expertise to transplant larger trees far beyond other companies in the same field. The video also lays out a few types of trees that may need transplant, and gives the reasons why transplanting should be considered.

Nancy Penrose, Owner of Big Trees Inc., stated: “We’re very happy with the result, because it represents what we do. If there’s a tree that needs to be moved, we can take care of it, get it to its new home, and ensure the owner knows what needs to happen for it to survive and thrive there. Our team has a lot of experience and we wanted to pass some of this on so people can make an informed decision about transplanting their tree.”

Nancy Penrose is the owner of Big Trees Inc. (http://www.bigtreesupply.com), located in Snohomish, WA, in the Seattle area. The company is one of the largest tree nurseries in the Seattle area with over 120,000 trees available in over 300 varieties.
