The Importance of Dental Check-ups

Regular dental check-ups play an important role in maintaining healthy teeth. Visiting your dentist at least twice a year can prevent infections from spreading, minimize the amount of dental work that is needed, and keep your gums disease-free. More frequent visits may be necessary if you are at a higher risk of oral diseases.

During a dental check-up, both your teeth and gums are thoroughly examined. Infections, tooth decay or other non-optimum dental condition are immediately addressed, and preventative measures such as teeth cleaning are taken to avoid potential future problems.

Mouth infections can occur for many different reasons, including dietary changes, stress and a weakened immune system. Left untreated, an infection can lead to cavities, abscesses and other dental issues that can require costly and extensive dental procedures. When an infection is caught early and cavities are filled quickly, your teeth will also last longer.

Another benefit of regular check-ups is the prevention of gum disease. Gingivitis is the beginning stage of gum disease and is often reversible. Periodontitis is a more serious gum condition involving an infection of the ligaments and bones that brace the tooth. The infection and resulting inflammation causes tooth and bone loss.

Gum disease can also lead to health issues. Gingivits for example, has been linked to heart disease and stroke due to the higher levels of bacteria that develop in areas of the mouth where the infection is located. As the disease progresses, the risk of cardiovascular disease becomes greater.

Teeth cleaning by a dentist is one of the best ways to ensure your gums remain healthy. It is a routine procedure that also reduces the likelihood of cavities. During the cleaning, several small tools are used to remove dental plaque, including a scaler and polisher. Plaque is a colorless film of bacteria (and sugars) that come from the food you eat. It is the acid from plaque that causes cavities. The scaler is used to remove the hard pieces of plaque that can form on and between teeth. The polisher gets rid of smaller plaque particles and buffs the teeth. The teeth cleaning procedure is usually performed by a hygienist, and takes approximately 30 minutes.

During your dental check-up and cleaning, you may also be given advice on how to improve your home brushing and flossing.

Taking proper care of your teeth can reduce your dental expenses and prevent tooth loss as you get older. Regular check-ups and cleaning are part of the maintenance process, and should be scheduled as often as necessary with your dentist.

Root Balling Trees for Fall

The successful moving and transplanting of a tree depends on several important factors, including the type of tree, where the tree is planted and how well it is prepared for planting. This preparation includes the methods used to dig the tree out of the ground and prepare its root ball.

The term “root ball’ refers to the network of roots at the tree’s base. Most of a tree’s roots are in the top soil, while the deeper roots are located directly under the trunk of the tree and its leaf canopy. When removing a tree from the ground for transplanting, the roots are wrapped in a ball and wrapped with burlap, twine and in some cases, nails and wire.

Depending on the tree, the mass of roots may need to be reduced somewhat in size to allow for easier transportation and transplanting. When preparing a root ball it is important that the soil remains attached to the roots so that the tree can continue to be nourished. Once the root ball has been created, it must be maintained with water and fertilizer until the tree is transplanted in its new location.

A tree can experience shock during the replanting process. This is due to the stress that occurs when the tree is removed from the ground. Tree shock can prevent the roots from growing properly in their new environment. When the roots are unable to establish themselves, it makes it more difficult for the tree to absorb the water and nutrients it needs. The lack of water and root growth can reduce growth and eventually cause the tree to die.

Tree shock can be minimized if the root ball procedure is done correctly. It will enable the tree to be able to survive and grow better in its new transplanted location. Fall and winter are the best times to dig up and transplant trees because that is when they are in their dormant stage. Cool weather also facilitates the root balling and transplanting process.

The root balls on the trees we have been removing have been meticulously prepared to ease the transplanting process. We do everything possible to minimize tree shock and other problems associated with transplanting. This helps ensure a transplanted tree will quickly grow and adapt to its new environment.

Recognizing the Signs of Foundation Problems

When a concrete foundation is poured, small cracks can appear as the cement dries and shrinks. Shrinkage cracks are vertical and extremely small. They typically appear on foundation walls, but do not affect the structural integrity of the home. Settlement cracks are a more serious problem. Unlike shrinkage cracks, they will often extend into the structure, weakening the building.
Most houses experience some degree of settlement (downward movement) after they have been built. Additional and more severe sinking can occur if the home was constructed on poorly compacted soil, or when the building’s weight compresses the soil beneath it.

Foundation settlement can also be caused by frequent or dramatic changes in the soil’s moisture content. When soil becomes wet, it expands. As it dries, it contracts and loses its volume, creating more space for the foundation to drop further into the ground. These moisture issues often come about from plumbing leaks, excessive rain and poor drainage.

Settlement can also take place when the roots from trees and foliage planted near the home absorb too much water from the soil. A poorly designed house or foundation can result in too much settlement as well.

If the settlement is uneven or extensive, the foundation will become stressed and start to crack. Large cracks generally appear due to continuing motion that occurs over a long period of time. Foundation cracks will not only weaken the structure, they make it easier for water to enter the building. Water seepage can further damage the home, in addition to causing potentially serious health issues due to mold and mildew buildup.

There are several methods that can be used to repair foundation cracks, including filling the cracks with bonding agents that create a waterproof seal. When addressing the problem, it is also important to discover what is causing the cracking. Correcting the underlying issue will prevent the situation from reccurring.

An experienced foundation repair expert can inspect your home for cracks and determine if there are any foundation problems that need to be addressed. In earthquake zones, regular foundation inspections and maintenance are essential. During a quake, a structure that has been weakened by cracks and water seepage can cause building walls to crumble or even the entire home to collapse. Keeping your foundation in good condition will prevent further damage and the need for more costly repairs. It will also help maintain the value of your home.
