Julian Construction Say Winter Rains Can Increase Drainage Problems

LOS ANGELES - Southern California construction and foundation repair expert Juan De La Torre, founder of Julian Construction (www.julianconstruction.com), says homeowners should be on the alert for increased drainage problems from this year’s winter rains.rain image When rainwater isn’t able to drain properly, it can cause damage to a home’s walls, basement and foundation.

Poor drainage can lead to water collecting on roofs, as well as pooling and soggy lawns,” says Julian. “If these conditions aren’t corrected, they can result in costly home repairs and other unanticipated expenses.”

Rainwater will accumulate on rooftops and overflow down walls when gutters and downspouts are clogged. The water produces moisture in the house, which can cause mildew and mold. It can also seep into the ground and penetrate cracks in the foundation.

Gutters and downspouts need regular maintenance and cleaning to remove leaves, twigs and other debris,” say Julian. “In addition keeping downspouts cleared, they should be mounted and angled to release water several feet away from the house.”

Water pooling and soggy lawns can occur with certain types of soil that retain moisture, or when water on a high elevation drains to property at a lower level. Severe basement and foundation issues can occur from water pooling near a structure. Julian recommends installing drains to help direct the water to another location.

Excessive moisture can also make any clay-based soil swell. Expanding soil can lift up and crack a foundation. When it dries, it will contract, which triggering even more structural troubles.

Drainage problems need to be fixed quickly to prevent water from making its way into the house and weakening the foundation.” says Julian.

Julian De La Torre has been doing earthquake retrofitting since the early 1990s and has personally worked on over 6,600 homes in Southern California. With this unmatched experience in the substructure areas of a home, Julian formed Julian Construction in 2001 with the goal of making safer homes, apartments and commercial properties throughout Southern California. His partner Shawn Kyles has inspected over 15,000 structures, working with both engineering firms and local departments of building and safety, and is an expert in foundation repair and house bolting. Julian Construction owns its own company and is built on a “no middlemen” model – no salesmen, no subcontractors. When you work with Julian Construction you get the principals of the company and workers of Julian Construction under your home.  The result is the highest quality work at affordable prices. California Contemporary Ballet Presents 13th Annual Production Of “The Snow Queen”

Los Angeles Ballet Features Fantasy-Filled Choreography With Newly Enhanced Magical, Musical ScoreSnow Queen Ballet image - Wolves

Los Angeles, CA: For three days at the Glendale Community College Performing Arts Theater, December 17-19, 2010, hundreds of ballet and holiday entertainment seekers are transported to Hans Christian Andersen’s fantasy world where good prevails, personified by a little girl named Gerda who saves her friend Kai from an evil spell. Evil is set right when the spell is ultimately reversed by the Snow Queen.

This year’s The Snow Queen (http://www.snowqueenballet.com) marks the 13th annual presentation of this great wintertime fairy tale, presented by the professional, non-profit company, California Contemporary Ballet (http://www.ctyballet.org). Brought to life by the creative vision of the company's artistic director and choreographer, Erin Holt, The Snow Queen ballet is presented complete with brilliant lighting and set design, custom handmade costumes, and an original, moving musical score by Randall Michael Tobin. The professional principal cast is accompanied by the California Contemporary Youth Ballet. The youth company will appear in supporting roles as forest creatures performing aerial feats, a choreographed raging river, living trees, gypsies, and a garden of flowers.

For Ms. Holt, the 2010 production of The Snow Queen is an evolutionary milestone, marked by changes within the company over the last thirteen years. Beginning primarily as a youth organization, today the company is one of Southern California’s burgeoning professional dance companies featuring the talent of career dancers and Holt’s unique brand of classical ballet and contemporary dance. Says Holt, “We are constantly working to enhance the show and create a new experience for our audience each year. This contributes to our longevity.”

The company has literally grown up,” Holt says as she observes Kelsey Glidewell of La Canada perform a series of steps and turns. Ms. Glidewell began her tenure with The Snow Queen ballet as a member of the companies youth division. This year, Ms. Glidewell has advanced, by working within the professional division of the company, and will be debuting in the shows starring role as Gerda. A senior at La Canada high school, Ms. Glidewell is currently auditioning and has already been accepted to several University dance programs. For Glidewell, who always dreamed of dancing the role, this season potentially marks her farewell to the show. “I have grown up with the show. I am always challenged by the choreography”. This year is her most challenging. “Gerda is on stage through the entire ballet and I am dancing with a new partner.” Her partner, Rob Westin of North Hollywood will perform the role of Kai.

The Snow Queen Ballet will be performed Friday through Sunday, December 17-19, 2010, at the Glendale Community College Performing Arts Theater, 1500 N. Verdugo Rd., Glendale CA. 91208. Show times are 7:30 p.m. on December 17 and 18 and matinee performances at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 18 and Sunday, December 19. Advance tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for students and $30 for adults and $25 for students at the door. For tickets or information, call Brown Paper Tickets at 800-938-3006 or visit online www.ccballet.net or www.snowqueenballet.com.

California Contemporary Ballet is established as a professional company featuring the talent of 5-7 career dancers performing a unique brand of classical and contemporary dance works. They are a non-profit company, providing its members with the opportunity to perform an exciting repertory of innovative and original dance projects performed in concerts, theatre and festivals throughout Southern California. California Contemporary Ballet is the resident troupe of the California DanceArts Academy located in the foothills of Los Angeles. The school and company share one goal, "to nurture and encourage students professionally and to develop artists performing for audiences with the creativity, imagination and joy of dance. "The company’s annual signature ballet titled, “The Snow Queen”, is a delightful winter production each December starring the career members of California Contemporary Ballet, accompanied by the California Contemporary Youth Ballet, and select dancers from the community, resulting in a cast of 60-70 dancers.

National Touring Production Comes to the Los Angeles Pantages Starting January 5Production Image

LOS ANGELES—Tickets are still available from Al Brooks Tickets (www.albrooks.com) for the “HAIR” tour that comes to the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles from January 5th to the 23rd. The national, 20-city tour of the Tony Award-winning revival of HAIR launched in Washington, DC, in October at the Kennedy Center Opera House.

This exuberant musical about a group of young Americans searching for peace and love in a turbulent time has struck a resonant chord with audiences young and old. “HAIR” features an extraordinary cast and dozens of unforgettable songs, including “Aquarius,” “Let the Sun Shine In,” “Good Morning Starshine,” and “Easy to Be Hard.”

The full creative team behind the Broadway production is on board for the national tour, including Diane Paulus (director), Karole Armitage (choreography), Scott Pask (scenic design), Michael McDonald (costume design), Kevin Adams (lighting design) and Acme Sound Partners (sound design). HAIR features a book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado and music by Galt MacDermot.

Hair continues its run on Broadway at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre and in London at the Gielgud Theatre.

While some find this show suitable for young adults, parental discretion is advised. There is a dimly lit 20-second scene with nudity that is non-sexual in nature.

Of course Al Brooks Tickets will have ‘HAIR’ tickets for our clients and we will have a great selection of theater events tickets throughout the run.” stated Jeff Brooks, President of Al Brooks Tickets. “It’s going to be a great show for a bunch of different age groups, both the people that were young in the 60s all the way down to young adults today. Great songs like that cross all age barriers. We can get theater tickets, and it all comes down to our sources – and they are the best in the business.”

Tickets Available from Al Brooks Tickets for Touring Production of “Next to Normal” at the Ahmanson Theatre

Tony-Winning Production Comes to the Ahmanson November 23 through January 2Production Image

LOS ANGELES – “Next to Normal,” Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey’s Tony-winning musical about a family's struggle with a mother's mental illness, is at the Ahmanson Theatre from November 23 through January 2, launching a 36-week tour in the U.S. and Canada. Tickets are still available from Al Brooks Tickets (www.albrooks.com) for the “Next to Normal” tour.

The musical -- which Times theater critic Charles McNulty described as “dramatically ambitious and sublimely staged” -- won three 2009 Tony Awards, including best score, best orchestrations and best actress in a musical for Alice Ripley as the mother. It received 11 nominations overall, and was also winner of the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for drama.

Reporting from New York — In a rehearsal room several floors above 42nd Street, actress Alice Ripley had just finished crying her way through a particularly heartbreaking scene in the show. Still sobbing, she started thinking about what she was doing, and, she says, "I can't believe I said yes, I would do this again. What was I thinking?"

Getting ready to portray bipolar suburbanite Diana Goodman on tour as she had on Broadway, Ripley knew what she was in for. "Playing Diana feels like I'm walking out into traffic," she says. "You know that the bus is going to hit you, but you just have to step out in front of it anyway."

So after leaving the Broadway production in July, the 46-year-old performer is preparing to again play Diana, the role that she has played since its first readings and off-Broadway performances.

"Next to Normal's" first song lyric may be, "They're the perfect loving family," but within moments, any semblance of normality is gone. Homemaker Diana, furiously making sandwiches that soon cover not just the table but the floor as well, is the fulcrum on which a yearning husband, a troubled daughter and a demanding son balance precariously.

In Los Angeles, as in New York, Ripley will be onstage in nearly every scene, sometimes lusty, sometimes comatose, plus singing a good percentage of the show's nearly 40 songs. Like the musical itself, she's alternately funny and spirited, angry and sad as she rollicks through a rock score punctuated with lyrical ballads and gentle melodies.

Al Brooks Tickets will have ‘Next to Normal’ tickets for our clients and we will have a great selection of theater events tickets throughout the run.” stated Jeff Brooks, President of Al Brooks Tickets. “It’s going to be a great, dramatic show which Los Angeles audiences are not going to want to miss. We can get theater tickets, and it all comes down to our sources – and they are the best in the business.”

Al Brooks Tickets is located in the Wilshire Grand Hotel at 900 Wilshire Blvd, Suite 104, Los Angeles, CA 90017 and provides tickets for venues throughout the US and internationally. They can be reached by phone at 800-341-2766 or 213-626-5863, by email at customer_service@albrooks.com or by fax at 213-626-4808. In some cases, the original concrete was made of poor quality materials or has been badly deteriorated over the years. In most cases you can live in your home while Julian Construction, Inc. installs your new foundation, and we also offer 0% interest, if you need to finance your replacement.”

Right now Julian Construction is offering the Winter Foundation Replacement Internet-Only Special of 50% Off, for a limited time. This includes all permits, engineering, and fixing any stucco and siding. And Free Floor Leveling is included. Julian can complete the work in two weeks.

Peter's Last Sermon: Identity and Discipleship in the Gospel of Mark” by James Dawsey Has Just Been Published by MercerBook Cover Image University Press

DALLAS - Award-winning book author and novel editor Susan Mary Malone of Malone Editorial Services (http://www.maloneeditorial.com/), announced that her novel development client James Dawsey, author of the non-fiction work “Peter's Last Sermon: Identity and Discipleship in the Gospel of Mark,” has just been published by Mercer University Press.

James Dawsey stated, “I loved working with Susan Malone. Working with her was like taking a graduate writing course. As would any superb teacher, Susan pointed out the flaws, made sure I understood, suggested approaches, provided unlimited follow-up as I revised, and her optimistic, bountiful encouragement made it all a fun experience! Would I recommend Susan Malone to others? Yes and yes. My novel, “Masters and Savages,” came out in June 2009. I was so impressed with her work that I sent “Peter's Last Sermon: Identity and Discipleship in the Gospel of Mark” to her, and I've also sent my most recent novel manuscript to her. If you are looking for help, but don't see exactly where you need it, then Ms. Susan Malone from Malone Editorial is the person you should contact.”

Susan Mary Malone stated, “I call myself a ‘developmental editor.’ It’s not merely book proofreader or correcting someone’s grammar or sentence structure. I dive right into the character development and story development. With James Dawsey, this is his second published book on which I’ve worked with him, and his writing is getting better all the time.”

Susan Malone's professional background includes working as an editor, columnist and reporter for newspapers and magazines. She is the author of “By the Book,” “BodySculpting: The Weisbeck Way,” “Fourth and Long” and “Five Keys to Understanding Men.”

Julian Construction Expands Its Headquarters

LOS ANGELES: Julian de La Torre, founder of Julian Construction, which specializes in House Bolting, Foundation Replacement, and Floor Leveling in Los Angeles, Long Beach, Santa Barbara, Burbank and all cities in between was proud when he expanded his headquarters to a large commercial building with a sizable material yard in Los Angeles.

Julian stated "This allowed us to buy more material and pass the savings on to the customer. It makes sense, if you buy material in larger quantities, then you can bring better prices to the marketplace. In order to do this you have to have a place to store the lumber and hardware.”

That was 2005, since then Julian has maintained the best price available in the Foundation business. They even guarantee it in writing. While some contractors price work on maximums, Julian looks at what is necessary in order to earn the business.

We specialize in House Bolting, Foundation Replacement and Foundation Repair, areas of the structure that are not typically viewed by the consumer, but are the most important. It’s simple. We want to fix foundations, and to do that we have to earn the business. In order to have the workers and material to the job site on time, we needed a material yard. Some foundation contractors work out of their garage, a small office, or even a PO Box. They pick up material on the way to the job site. We did not want to be like that. I wanted the guys to be on time, not show up late, and get there with the right material,” said Julian

Julian Construction is here for the long haul, which means its customers can find them right at the corner of Jefferson and 9th Street in the City of Los Angeles.

Our foundation customers know we are not a paper contractor, one look at our yard will tell them that! I love the internet, but with it comes some dangers. A contractor can seem competent because he has to a nice web site, but in reality he just subcontracts the work out. Julian Construction completes all the work under the home without the use of subcontractors, which also saves the consumer money, and insures the quality of work. There are some other good companies out there, I know we are the best, that’s why I put my name on the door. Julian Construction will quake-proof your home, and you can find us at 2900 W. Jefferson Blvd in the heart of Los Angeles, on the web at www.julianconstruction.com, or by phone at 323-733-3377,” concluded Julian.

Aero & Marine Tax Professionals Obtains Sales Tax Exemption for Motorsports Stores Owner

Southern California Store Owner Gets Sales Tax Exemption for Helicopter PurchasePablo's Chopper

SACRAMENTO, CA: Aero & Marine Tax Professionals (http://www.aeromarinetaxpros.com) has obtained a sales and use tax exemption from the California Board of Equalization for their client, Pablo V., in regards to his purchase of a helicopter.

Aero & Marine Tax Professionals are the pre-eminent experts in helping purchasers of aircraft and vessels to avoid paying sales and use tax in California.

Pablo said “I'm in the business of water sports, and I own motorcycle stores. Water-craft, ATVs, quads, SUVs, UTVs, we sell all those units. We needed an aircraft to go to all the shows, to all the races, and we take a lot of the clients to fly. The aircraft has been a tremendous aid to do a lot of business. Anyone can take you to dinner and buy you steak and wine, but I take them flying. Giving a client a ride in a helicopter is a very unique experience. It cuts a lot of time, and makes it very exclusive. You get to have one-on-one time with your client, where with a commercial airline, you couldn't. It's very useful in my business.”

We go to races in the desert - Ensenada, Mexico and Baja, California – all those races are very difficult to get to. You can get to somewhere close by, but logistics is a problem. It saves me a tremendous amount of time, even with places that you could get to driving – it cuts the time in half. I can fly straight in.”

What I liked about Aero & Marine Tax Professionals was a straightforward attitude, their not-giving-up attitude and the simplicity. I would absolutely recommend them! I already have,” concluded Pablo.

Thomas Alston, President of Aero & Marine Tax Professionals, stated “Despite the current financial crisis, the opportunities in the personal and business aircraft sector for tax savings is expanding. We have the knowledge, experience and expertise to help purchasers of aircraft in California to legally avoid paying aircraft tax or yacht tax.”

Aero & Marine Tax Professionals shows purchasers how to avoid sales tax, specifically how to avoid aircraft tax and yacht tax in California and to make certain the full value of their next aircraft, vehicle or vessel goes into their pocket--not the government's. They have successfully filed hundreds of tax returns with the California State Board of Equalization. Mr. Alston has also published many articles on sales and use tax.

Broken Foundation Slabs Can Be Repaired Says Julian Construction

Company Says Homeowners Can Save Money on Repair vs. Replacementconcrete crack

LOS ANGELES - Southern California foundation repair experts Julian Construction (www.julianconstruction.com), advise homeowners that in many cases broken concrete slab foundations can be repaired, saving property owners thousands of dollars in replacement costs.

Simple cracks, and even more extensive foundation damage can usually be repaired,” says Julian De La Torre, founder of Julian Construction. “In either case, homeowners can save money by repairing broken slab foundations if the situation is detected early enough.”

Julian says cracked or broken slabs can be caused by shrinkage from water damage, foundation settlement, and poor soil preparation during construction. He recommends homeowners get a thorough foundation inspection if any of the following problems are observed:

  • Stretched or buckled linoleum flooring

  • Unlevel floors

  • Broken floor tiles

  • Bumps in carpet

  • Cracks around windows and door frames

  • Sloping floors

  • Domed floors in center of room

  • Sticky doors or windows that are difficult to open and close.

Professional foundation inspections are a homeowner’s first line of defense in preventing foundation damage,” says Julian. “The longer you wait to identify and handle a foundation problem, the worse it gets - and the more money it will cost to fix it.”

Julian De La Torre has been doing foundation repair and earthquake retrofitting since the early 1990s and has personally worked on over 6,600 homes in Southern California. Julian Construction Says Homeowners Need to Prepare for "The Big One"

LOS ANGELES - Southern California construction and foundation repair experts Julian Construction (www.julianconstruction.com) saySan Andreas Fault homeowners need to prepare for the next major earthquake which, according to a new study by US researchers, could happen at any time.

It’s not a question of “if” California will be hit by a major quake, but when,” say Julian Construction founder Julian De La Torre.

Julian points to a study released in September by geologists at the University of California Irvine and Arizona State University, in which scientists concluded that large quakes strike the San Andreas fault every 45 to 144 years.

The last big quake in California was in 1857 – over 150 years ago,” says Julian. “We are actually overdue for a major quake and we need to be prepared.”

It is estimated that a large earthquake in the region could cause between 2,000 – 50,000 people to lose their lives, and result in billions of dollars in damage.

Julian recommends Southern California residents take advantage of disaster preparedness programs offered by groups such as California Volunteers and the American Red Cross. He also suggests residents have their homes inspected for “earthquake readiness.”

The motion of an earthquake can shake a house off of its foundation,” says Julian. “Earthquake retrofitting can prevent homes from falling down or from experiencing major damage during seismic activity.”

Malone Editorial Services Helps Author Get First Book Published

Swiss Chocolate” by James Weil to be Published by Dailey Swan Publishing in November, 2010cover graphic

DALLAS - Award-winning book author and novel editor Susan Mary Malone of Malone Editorial Services (http://www.maloneeditorial.com/), announced that her novel development client James Weil, author of the fiction work “Swiss Chocolate,” will be published by Dailey Swan Publishing in November, 2010.

James Weil stated "I wrote Swiss Chocolate off the top of my head for nine months. But it was 600 pages in need of serious editing. I had no idea where to begin. I was just too close to the story. I found Susan Mary Malone on the internet, and after reading what others had written about her editing skills I hired her on the spot. Not only did she give me a brilliant critique, but she honed in on the essential aspects of the story and characters and helped me flesh them out. Lucky for me, I didn’t take her editing personally, because she was brutally honest and cut and slashed endless window dressing.”

With her help, she taught me some of the most essential skills about good story telling. Working with her has made a permanent impact on my writing. She followed up with me as I painfully worked through the rewrites. I sent her back entire chapters, and she continued to mark them up and send them back with words of encouragement and wonderful critiques. This continued for months until Susan told me congratulations, I had nailed it, and go celebrate. And low and behold, my book got published. Susan Mary Malone is a truly gifted editor," concluded Weil.

Susan Mary Malone stated, “I call myself a ‘developmental editor.’ It’s not merely book proofreader or correcting someone’s grammar or sentence structure. I dive right into the character development and story development. With a brand new author, those are the things that usually need work. With James Weil, he finally nailed it and now he will be published. It’s the dream for all would-be writers.”

Susan Malone's professional background includes working as an editor, columnist and reporter for newspapers and magazines. She is the author of “By the Book,” “BodySculpting: The Weisbeck Way,” “Fourth and Long” and “Five Keys to Understanding Men.”

Malone Editorial Services offers a comprehensive developmental editing package for fiction & non-fiction manuscripts.
Over 35 books edited by Malone Editorial Services have recently sold to traditional publishers. Clients include NY Times Bestselling author Mary B. Morrison, and Essence Bestselling author Naleighna Kai. Other notable edited books include: “The Things I Could Tell You” by Jeremy Woodson (nominated for an NAACP Literary Award); “O'Brien's Desk” (a Publishers Weekly Spring Pick to Watch); “Ida Mae Tutweiler and the Traveling Tea Party” (made into a Hallmark film), among many others.
